teen romance (super awkward webzine creator meets also awkward fanfic writer IRL, also her parents don't GET her at all)
This was a really cute love story that also deals lightly with mental health--social anxiety, anxiety in general, recovering from trauma. It does get super serious at the end with one teen contemplating suicide, but I wasn't sure if this was realistic (does the author have experience with/has she done research on this, or is it really just a plot device?) so I'm not sure I would recommend it if your aim is to better understand mental health issues, but many readers can probably relate in part to some of Eliza's anxieties.

Also recommended: Queens of Geek for more Comic Con zaniness, or Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl for extra character development. Also, maybe Dress Codes for Small Towns for amazingly creative cosplay and complex characters. ( )

Review:
I really liked it!!

I'd been seeing this book in my feed for a while, but I didn't put it on my tbr because I seriously thought it was about monsters, and the cover just didn't register with me. Then I saw a jessethereader video in which he kinda introduced/discussed the book, and I was intrigued.

So, I started it, and I was instantly drawn into the story. I personally love secret-identity stories, so this was right up my alley! I really liked the writing, and the fanart wasn't too boring, so it was good!!

What I didn't like: I seriously hated Wallace's attitude to her identity, I mean I expected him to rage and all for a while, but I seriously didn't imagine that he would be the one to pressure her to finish the comic. I really didn't like that part, even more because it almost drove her to killing herself......which was seriously not okay.

I also didn't like Eliza's behaviour and attitude towards her family somehow? I get that she was dealing with anxiety, and very close to depression, but in my opinion, even though parents don't get a lot of the things we face, I fell they might have been more receptive to her had she not shut them and her brothers out. I'm not trying to insult anyone, nor am I trying to trivialise her problems, but she needed to have a talk with her family long before it actually happened.

I loved the book, and I recommend it to anyone who likes fanfiction, the secret-identity trope and slight romance(do not go into this with romance as the main expectation). ( )

I was just gonna start this... And I kept reading because I couldn't stop. I loved this book! So many feelings... But just perfect... There are monsters in the sea. ( )

This book was amazing. It is about fandom and creativity, relationships and connections, identity, and learning to be comfortable in your own skin.

Eliza is the anonymous creator of the very popular webcomic Monstrous Seas. Online, she's a rockstar. In real life, she's the social outcast who gets outright ignored if not picked on at school. She suffers from severe social anxiety and would rather be at her computer working on her webcomic than anything else.

Wallace is the new transfer student, and is a huge Monstrous Seas fan and a Big Name Fan, the most popular fanfiction writer on the forums. He also has some social anxiety and would prefer to communicate by writing. He and Eliza become friends and then something more, only he doesn't know Eliza's secret.

This was SO GOOD. I fell in love with Eliza and Wallace, and was super invested in their story. And I really want to read Monstrous Seas now! ( )
