"Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best -- the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk - or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for. It's time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld"--… (mais)

Informação Sobre a Obra

Kings of the Wyld por Nicholas Eames

  1. 00
The Blade Itself por Joe Abercrombie (Kiddboyblue)
Kiddboyblue: Similar in style. Dark, Gritty, and humorous. Fantasy works that do not take themselves too serious.
  2. 00
The Steel Remains por Richard K. Morgan (Kiddboyblue)
Kiddboyblue: Though not as well written, "Steel Remains" mirrors the storyline of a retired hero who must once again go into battle.

***Directly after finishing***
My heart is full. I had such a good time reading this. My partner tried to speak to me while I was reading and I got a bit aggressive because he was pulling me out of the story. I'm very lucky that he thought it was great because that didn't happened in a very long time.

My status updates is a rollercoaster of emotions. I even wrote in my book because I needed to write my thoughts and didn't wanted to look for my phone and couldn't find my notebook.

Maybe I will write a more coherent review about the reasons why I think this story is amazing but safe to say... I will reread this one and I think this will become one of my favourites.

***Before reading***
I got sucked in by the blurb and the cover. I'm hoping it will be something like 'the Expandables' in a fantasy setting. ( )

Would definitely recommend

Not normally my kind of book but I enjoyed this one a lot. David Gemmel meets Pratchet in this sarcastic, dun filled, high octane adventure about getting the (war) band back together. A lot of reviews have been done on this book so I won't go into it further except to say itt was spirited and refreshing to read. ( )

I don't know what's going on, but goddamn, I'm finally enjoying the fantasy genre again.

I went through a binge years back, reading Tolkien, then Stephen R. Donaldson, then a crap-ton of forgettable fantasy. There was the odd thing that was okay, but overall, I just eventually drifted away because I was sick of the same Lord of the Rings story told over and over and over again, or getting a different story, but deplorable writing.

But I've read more fantasy in the past couple of years than I have in the past couple of decades, thanks to Scott Lynch's incredible Gentleman Bastard series, and now this, this big, brash, bold, beautiful Kings of the Wyld.

I honestly haven't had this much fun with a fantasy novel...well...ever. The characters are real, they're grumpy and tough and hard drinking and hard living....and getting old and worn down and fat. Eames has captured their voices and long-lived camaraderie expertly.

Then there's the world. A world that used to need heroes, but now has cheapened those past heroic deeds to mere spectacle for pay.

But it's the author's writing ability and imagination that win the day here. While we're laughing at the jokes...and trust me, there's quick one offs, and some that are set up well in advance, and goggling at the Band's exploits, Eames will suddenly come in with a moment that just yanks at your heartstrings and puts a lump in your throat.

I can't believe this guy is a first-time author. His writing is assured and well-paced.

In fact, I'm so impressed with this novel, I'm going to do something I usually never do...I'm going to dive straight into the second book. Because I loved this one so much. Could very well be my book of the year. ( )

I grew up reading SF from age 6+; I had everything from Asimov to Saberhagen floating around the house, and a hundred more I've forgotten. Maybe we shouldn’t be too hard on Grimdark. Most of Abercrombie’s work is Grimdark, and utterly glorious! Bad Grimdark on the other hand, of which there is a lot around at the moment plaguing Goodreads recommendations, does indeed suck monkeyballs. At the moment especially we might be wanting to switch off and to have a cosy experience even of this kind of material, but I personally value being nudged and frowned at as I veg out, by some reviewers who are not paid to sit with me with Kettle Chip crumbs down my sweatshit. Of course, don't go by me. One person's complex content is another person's overblown pseudo-intellectual wankery. No idea which this is, haven't seen it.

We're an increasingly bad-tempered species, being triggered by the rubbish we find ourselves spending money on in an as often as not misguided attempt to switch off the stress a while. The entire system of SF-book-writing is diseased, and playing the game of chomping through series is playing a part in that. We are not separated by a vacuum from the makers. We're not innocent, we're not merely lucky or conned consumers - we adopt the consumerist patterns of behaviour that complete the loop.

“King’s of the Wyld” as a concept is excellent if hardly revolutionary (vide above). It’s not going to challenge anyone or change the world; it’s just entertaining stuff. Apart from a few Grimdark writers, almost every story is like that. One of my SF mate summarises them all as 'shit ... we let something on the ship ... look out' (apply the same concept to almost any Grimdark of your choice). That could be in the blurb for every one of them. Of course, SF reviewers are also pointless as at the end of the day it's just their opinion and where some have rated some works highly I have been disappointed by them and the reverse. Never be put off by what people say, you have your own mind…have a look and you will decide for yourself. ( )

Classic epic fantasy, with a side of humor.

Reminiscent of my favorite movie, The Blues Brothers, the basic premise is "it's time to get the band back together." Gabriel comes hat in hand to beg his old friend, Clay Cooper, to help rescue his hopelessly besieged daughter. Clay, who has settled into married life, declines until his young daughter asks what he would do if it were she who was trapped. The two then set off to gather the rest of the Kings of the Wyld, a legendary group who battled darkness. Lots of fun along the way, rescuing a king, freeing one of their members turned to stone, collecting a legendary sword, and getting robbed by a group of female thieves twice.

Eames has created a wonderful world, filled with monsters, and a number of villains. His choice of gathering 40-50 year olds, who are alternately revered or ridiculed, is unusual, but appealing to older male readers of fantasy. I enjoyed reading the interview at the back, where he discusses his characters as members of a rock band. ( )
