When a bag of bones is found on a housing complex, DCI Hennessey and DS Yellich are hopeful that identification will be easy, but their hopes are dashed when DNA shows the bones to be the remains of 12 separate people. They begin the painstaking work of tracking down all the missing persons reports from the previous dozen years or so, but meanwhile the murderer has plans of his own, for further mayhem…. This 9th novel in the lovely Hennessey and Yellich series is unusual in that it involves a serial killer, but the firm setting of York and the dogged determination of our two lead characters are as compelling as ever in this hard-to-find series. The author structures his novels by situating each chapter at a given time (for example, “Thursday, 0900 to 1645”) and the reader knows that the events in the chapter occur during the period specified; this is misleading at one point in this particular entry, but otherwise the details are as accurate as always, and one comes away from the book feeling that one truly understands the processes of police investigation; recommended! i believe this is his second serial killer. makes york seem a scary place. hard to imagine!
