This book would be good for primary readers who are beginning to learn how to read. This story is about Jojo and her adventures as she makes messes and learns to clean them up. This book is cute and would be helpful for emergent readers who enjoy silly stories. ( )

Jojo throws herself into all her daily activities to the point that she gets rather messy. Daddy doesn't mind, except for when Jojo and her friend Freddy are exceptionally careless with a pillow fight that results in feathers everywhere. However, Jojo comes up with another messy project -- fingerpainting a card -- that she knows Daddy will just love.

This is part of a series by the author of the "Fancy Nancy" series; these books focus on Nancy's younger sister Jojo and thus are even simpler early readers. I could see how younger siblings whose older siblings read Fancy Nancy titles would really be excited for these books. Like the Fancy Nancy books, this title focuses on everyday experiences that little children have. The language is simple and repetitive for the youngest reader to practice reading on their own.

One thing I didn't really like is that the book could go a little further to explain the reason why Daddy is mad about the pillow fight but not any of the other messes. It will probably seem a little arbitrary to young children, even if it is obvious to adults that the rationale is extreme carelessness. It is good, however, that Jojo and Freddy are made to clean up the mess, and Jojo acknowledges how that part is not fun. And, of course, it's nice to see forgiving and happy parents.

The illustrations are in the same style as the Fancy Nancy series so if you like those, these will appeal as well. ( )
