Jennifer Walters, attorney at law and big green superhero, spent most of Civil War II in a coma, waking to find her cousin, Bruce Banner, had been killed by Hawkeye.

The first six issues of She-Hulk compiled here are slow, with very few flashy action scenes or moments of great heroism. Instead we see a very human-looking Jen Walters starting her first day at a new lawfirm, trying very, very hard not to fall apart. The physical and emotional trauma she endured manifesting as irritability, fear, and a desire to isolate herself, Jen tries to get back to "normal" without getting triggered by every mention of her cousin's name.

Her first client is a young woman being unlawfully evicted. Her story, of violence and trauma, mirrors Jen's, but in her case there was no cosmic supervillain, just ordinary human violence, but the toil it takes on the mind is just the same.

I liked the slowness of these issues, it felt like you were really digging into her psyche while also giving the reader hope that the brave heroine will return - she's just got to sort her head out first. ( )

Jen Walters is no longer stuck in Green or Grey She-Hulk mode, I guess. She's trying to find a normal life but her expertise as a lawyer and super-hero means she gets the weird cases, I guess. One of them is Maise Brewn who had a nasty terrible thing happen to her and now she is a recluse in a crappy building who can create a monster that is a manifestation of fear.

Mariko Tamaki's script uses a lot of inner monologue which I found to be a nice way to explain the inner turmoil and PTSD Jen is facing in this series. ( )

I liked this a lot. I enjoy Tamaki's writing, and the art was really beautiful and clean.

I know one of my friends isn't a huge fan of this iteration because of the whole PTSD thing, but I had like no background knowledge of the character going into this--so I found it to be an interesting aspect to her character, rather than detrimental. ( )

Ha, ha, Marvel! You can't fool me four times in a row. This time I actually knew this series was canceled before I began reading the first volume. So there!

The pace is slow, but I felt the time was used well until the sort of silly climactic fight scene. I prefer the super-confident, fun-loving She-Hulk of the past, but I'm willing to follow this newest iteration to see how the traumatized Jen Walters comes through this period of hardship and how long the gray-with-green-highlights phase lasts. (Just two more volumes, apparently.)

This might be the only semi-decent thing to come out of [b:Civil War II|29467801|Civil War II|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1509625315s/29467801.jpg|49744300]. ( )
