"Born Leader" was later published as "Worlds Apart" In my quest to review classic SF literature I am striving to find authors beyond the usual suspects. J.T. McIntosh is a pleasant discovery. He is one of the better but forgotten writers of the 50s and 60s. This is very good for a 1954 book. It does not feel dated and still works today. It's focused on a society made of those that successfully moved from a dying Earth only to have some of old Earth come back to endanger them. It has one of the best opening lines of any book I've read this year. "Marrying Toni was one of the formative experiences in the lives of young Mundans. She represented one of the anythings that everyone felt he had to try once." After an opening like that you have to keep reading. More sophisticated then much of early SF. His writing is not heavy on science tech but it is certainly not Space Opera. He has a great understanding of human psychology and society. I also recommend his "Flight From Rebirth" and "Time for a Change". sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

No place like earth, 1952 & Gateway to tomorrow, 1954) so when I saw this book I leapt at the chance to read a full length novel by one of the better contributors to the aforementioned anthologies.
Surprisingly, even though it was written in 1954, Born Leader (later published as Worlds Apart in 1958) doesn't feel dated like some 1950s/60s scifi novels do.
It's the story of a civilisation on the planet Mundis that was settled by people who thought they were the last space flight from a collapsing civilisation on earth. Little do they know a nearby planet Secundis also has been settled by a later flight which was put together after civilisation had collapsed and are looking to 'reunify' aka conquer other human settlements.
Emerging from this and conflict between the age groups on Mundis comes Rog Foley who has plans about what to do and how things should be handled.
Overall it's a great story from a largely forgotten author.
