Annabelle and Bayard Van Duyvil live a charmed life in New York: he's the scion of an old Knickerbocker family, she grew up in a Tudor house in England, they had a fairytale romance in London, they have three-year-old twins on whom they dot, and he's recreated her family home on the banks of the Hudson and named it Illyria.Yes, there are rumors that she's having an affair with the architect, but rumors are rumors and people will gossip. But then Bayard is found dead with a knife in his chest on the night of their Twelfth Night ball, Annabelle goes missing, presumed drowned, and the papers go mad. Bay's sister, Janie, forms an unlikely alliance with a reporter to try and uncover the truth, convinced that Bay would never have killed his wife, that it must be a third party. And why did her brother die with the name George on his lips?… (mais)

“When you think about it, everything has been said before, in one way or another. It’s only our experience of it that makes it new.”

Bay and Annabelle’s first ball at their new home comes to a tragic end when he is found with a knife in his heart and she is nowhere to be found. Mrs. Van Duyvil will not let murder, disappearance or scandal tarnish the reputation of the family. Anne is dealing with a divorce from her adulterous husband and the death of her beloved cousin Bay by seeming aloof and showing off that nothing affects her. It’s only his sister Janie who is interested in finding out the truth and decides to team up with the journalist Mr. Burke to get about it.

The story is told in two timelines – one follows Janie’s quest; the other follows Bay in his journey to London a few years ago and his love affair with Georgie. I especially liked their interactions. The mystery surrounding Annabelle, Georgie and Giles and ultimately the murders is very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed not being able to guess true culprit till the very end. My only problem was that I didn’t like most of the characters except Janie and Bay in his stint at London. However, the story was so interesting that the pretentious and conniving characters didn’t stop me from completing or enjoying the book. I hope to read other books by this author as well. ( )

My review was interrupted by a giant spider, so I'll just say I enjoyed this engaging and twisty book with great characters. ( )

This story of murder, deceit and betrayal among the wealthy at the end of the Gilded Age dragged on waaaaaaay too long. This is a common complaint I have about books in general, it seems that the art of editing has died. With tighter plotting, and at about half its current length of almost 400 pages, this might have been a well-crafted and enjoyable novel; but as it stands it was mostly tedious and anticlimactic.

I think it says something that my most compelling question at the end was, "Oh my God, did they have insurance?!" ( )

It seems like since Downton Abbey there is been a resurgence in books set in the Edwardian era and the Gilded Age. I'm very glad that this is the first book that I have read in this time period, because it has really encouraged me to dive into this sub-genre. The English Wife is an historical fiction with mystery novel set in high society New York & London and opens with the murder of Bay Van Duyvil, son of wealthy New York family and the death or disappearance of his British wife Annabelle. From there the story splits into two parts: the tale of his sister Jane in the aftermath of the shocking murder and the story of Bay's trip to Europe, five years earlier.

This story captivated me from the shocking opening and kept me reading to find out what happened, through several twists and turns. The story is a sad one (opening with a murder), but also a bit hopeful at the same time. Lauren Willig does a good job of creating a world of opulence and restriction that these characters both inhabit and battle against. It was also interesting to see her portrayal of a 19th century court inquisition (I do love a good court case). This story had all the things I really like: a dual timeline, mystery, and a little romance. ( )

The English Wife is an intriguing story from the beginning until the end. It switches back and forth from year to year but it is not difficult to follow. One can easily visualize the entire locations both England and the United States easily. There is a definite beginning, middle and end. The book ending is proper it actually comes to a conclusion. I highly recommend The English Wife, hence the five star rating that I attach here. ( )
