Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orleans, Belles are revered, for they control beauty, and beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orleans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. But it's not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite-the Belle chosen by the queen of Orleans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie-that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision. With the future of Orleans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide: save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.… (mais)

Rarely do I finish a book and not know if I liked it or not, but this is one of those books. I didn't love the main character, and I felt like the plot was not taking off. I was, essentially, waiting for something to happen that never materializes throughout the book. Loads of intrigue, but I remained fairly disinterested.

Camellia is one of the Belles, young women bred and raised to make the Gris (the people of Orléans) beautiful. As daughters of the Goddess of Beauty, their mastery of the arcana give them the power to temporarily transform the grey skin, red eyes, and less than perfect bodies of the Gris to any shade, texture, and shape they desire. Camille's ultimate desire is to be chosen as the favorite. She slowly discovers that there is darkness in her world that she doesn't know, much less understand. She has to make careful decisions about who she can trust in order to survive and save Orléans. ( )

The worldbuilding here was magnifique. I will be returning to this gorgeously rendered dark and beautiful world. ( )

This book took a while to get through because life intervened. But I still think it was still paced a little slow. And I really wanted the main character to be more proactive sooner. However, Clayton builds a beaatiful, lush, and detailed world. Part New Orleans mardi-gras, part 18th century France (still with monarchs). I really liked the blend of myth and magic and the fact that skin color (except gray) didn't matter as long as one was beautiful. And that is at the heart of the story. What would one do to be beautiful? With some commentary that beauty on the outside does not mean one is beautiful on the inside and power is easily transformed into abuse. The ending was a bit abrupt and the story certainly felt unfinished but it is the beginning of a series and I'm definitely waiting for book #2. ( )

I reread this to read what I thought was going to be the 2nd book in a trilogy. Now I understand the sequel ends this series and honestly I'm not ready.
I don't know precisely what the appeal of this book is. I just know I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I loved this book. It was a charming young adult novel. I look forward to the other books in the series. ( )

This book was a mixed bag. The world building was really interesting, and it was an easy read. But... nothing happened for most of the book. It took 3/4 of the book to get to the plot that was mentioned in the summary blurb, and I nearly DNF'ed so many times before then. There were hints throughout that something wasn't right in the palace, but without something concrete until that late in the book, I wasn't really interested.

Also, when I wasn't actively reading the book, I forgot all about it. Which explains why it took me three months to finish.

The last quarter of the book was interesting, though, and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I may decide to continue with book 2; I might not. This didn't leave much of an impression on me, so it's anyone's guess if I'll even remember the plot whenever book 2 comes out.
