If you love to read, and presumably you do since you've picked up this book, you know that some books affect you so profoundly they forever change the way you think about the world. Some books, on the other hand, disappoint you so much you want to throw them against the wall. Either way, it's clear that a book can be your new soul mate or the bad relationship you need to end. In Dear Fahrenheit 451, librarian Annie Spence has crafted love letters and breakup notes to the iconic and eclectic books she has encountered over the years. From breaking up with The Giving Tree (a dysfunctional relationship book if ever there was one), to her love letter to The Time Traveler's Wife (a novel less about time travel and more about the life of a marriage, with all of its ups and downs), Spence will make you think of old favorites in a new way. Filled with suggested reading lists, Spence's take on classic and contemporary books is very much like the best of literature sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes surprisingly poignant, and filled with universal truths. A celebration of reading, Dear Fahrenheit 451 is for anyone who loves nothing more than curling up with a good book...and another, and another, and another!… (mais)

This is definitely one of those "down the rabbit hole" books. I kept having to stop to look up or write down a title mentioned, so be prepared to spend longer on this one. That being said I LOVED it. Perfect for any bibliophile. Annie Spence is quirky, spunky, and often hilarious as she bares a piece of her self in these pages. Insightful and well organized I loved every moment I spent with this one, even if I disagreed on a particular book though most of the time I was with her on her choices.

Whether you are already a bibliophile or just testing the waters, this is a great source of inspiration with references that you will both recognize and books you didnt know exisisted.

The only disappoinment is that Spence isn't my local librarian. I'd love to talk bookish with her anyday ( )

The concept is great, and I wanted to finish the book, but I just cannot do the language.

In this unique epistolary work professional librarian Annie Spence has written letters to a diverse selection of books she has had the fortune (and not infrequently the disappointment) of crossing paths with in life and in her work. Some, dedicated to works she clearly treasures, are appreciative and heartfelt; others are addressed to reads that are hopelessly outdated or regrettably forgettable. Spence's wit and snark are liberally sprinkled throughout. Luckily, we seem to share a similar sense of humor — had we not, I might not have enjoyed the book nearly as much. It probably also helped to be at least casually familiar with most of the books mentioned.

Having worked in a library for the past two decades myself, I delighted in her references to library work, from the joy of discovering overlooked gems and connecting readers with the books they're looking for, to weeding the unloved and forgotten book or having to take a deep breath and steel oneself when the patron who struggles with boundaries walks in. In these moments I felt Spence was surely winking in my direction. ( )

I read it in one sitting and then immediately started to reread it, making a list of books that sounded intriguing. At times, the style and voice got annoying but you could easily skip ahead and then come back. I enjoyed it and recommend it as a good "palate cleanser". ( )

This was a fun/funny read for my commute, featuring a Gen-X librarian's book recommendations, sprinkles of profanity, and a feminist edge. It mentions books that we've all read (or heard of) but maybe forgot about. Kudos to the audio narrator for an excellent job! Also: LISTS! ( )

I absolutely demand of you and everyone I know that they be widely read in every damn field there is; in every religion and every art form and don't tell me you haven't got time! There's plenty of time. You need all of these cross-references. You never know when your head is going to use this fuel, this food for its purposes.

This book is dedicated to the other six Authiers from the double-wide that was always taking in more people and animals than there was space for, who raised me and had such white-hot pride for me I rarely suffered the cold of my own doubt.

You're upsetting the patrons as well, or rather, I am upsetting them by not putting all the Killings next to each other. But I must stand firm. The biography section is organized in alphabetical order by the subject of the book, not the author. Yes, even if the author's name appears in a larger font than said biography subject. If we did it for you, we'd have to do it for everyone and then there would just be panic... We can't open ourselves up to that kind of chaos in the stacks. Next thing you know, we're alphabetizing the entire collection by title, which is a proposition we receive in the suggestion box at least once a year.
