I felt like Holly Black tried too hard in this book. There were times where she tried to dive into the history of the realm but I was just lost since none of it really had to do with the plot at hand (imo). I got very big ACOTAR vibes throughout this book, however I still enjoyed the plot, the scenery, and the characters. I'm still going to finish the series to see if my opinion changes!! ( )

I wrote this whole review and then Goodreads didn't save anything so this will not be my best review because I don't want to re-write everything.

I liked this book which I'm happy about because it's the first YA fantasy I've really liked since I read An Enchantment of Ravens, which was the first book I read this year. I'm back home again because of COVID and I have a closet full of books I bought while back in high school so I'm probably going to be reading a lot more YA fantasy in order to get through some of those. It's nice to see I haven't let the genre behind quite yet.

I really liked that this book used the folklore of Fae being pretty evil towards people and I also liked that they are not able to lie. I always prefer the more traditional folklore Fae, not just pretty people with pointy ears, so this is right up my alley. I thought Black did a great job executing a books where traditional Fae lore was well executed and modernized to create an interesting story. By having eviler Fae, it gives the human characters like Jude to feel conflicted and have complex motivations. It makes the characters seem more real and allowed me to understand why the would make a choice even if it was violent or I didn't agree.

I really liked this and I would be interested in reading the sequels as soon as I can get my hand on a library copy! ( )

YA but it's Holly Black so I gotta keep up.
------------------

At about 35% I'm letting it go. I have it running on audio and when I'm away from it, I completely forget about it. There is nothing pulling me back to the story or even leaving me to daydream about when I am away.

It's definitely YA, probably young-YA, with angst and a drive by our main character to not give into her bully but to become better than him. I've read that our MC and the bully become a love interest so it's an enemies to lovers plot which is outside my reading interest and usually pissed me off.

I'm bored with the story. It is repetitive and slow and not very fae though it's supposed to be set in the fae world. Maybe because our view point is from the human MC.

I'm not the biggest fan of HB but I keep trying and I hear she has an adult book coming out so I will try with that also. ( )

“A well-seasoned strategist waits for the right opportunity.”

This book had everything I love in a great book; detailed plot, interesting characters, and plot twist after plot twist. Jude is a character that you come to care for and I can’t wait to see how she develops throughout the series. ( )

The fact that Jude and Taryn are twins (something that never happens with faeries) was interesting but never fully explored, just like the character of Taryn herself. She's so different from Jude, and so important to her, but seems like she's barely a character (how long has she been with Locke? Why does she react to her new life so differently from Jude? Does she keep Locke's identity a secret because she so desperately wants to stay or because she's scared of him? How does her love for her sister (it's clear that Jude loves her dearly but I have no idea if the reverse is true) impact all of that?)

Jude herself, while fierce and determined, is actually pretty stupid. It's immediately obvious that Locke is with her sister, and that Cadan is obsessed with her because he loves her. You don't write someone's name over and over because you hate them! This could be an interesting facet of her character if it ever seemed like Black did it deliberately, but Black treats Jude as though she is incredibly smart, figuring out Oak's identity almost immediately, linking Locke's mother's death to Balekin's note... when she regularly misses the obvious.

Viv is, I think, actually the most developed main character! Her motivations and desire are clear and consistent, as are her relationships with her family.

Despite this inconsistent character work, Holly Black is, as always, a master of faeries and their capricious ways, making Mordoc a sympathetic character even after having introduced him so brutally. ( )
