Finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction "[These stories] vibrate with originality, queerness, sensuality and the strange."--Roxane Gay "In these formally brilliant and emotionally charged tales, Machado gives literal shape to women's memories and hunger and desire. I couldn't put it down."--Karen Russell In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies. A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella "Especially Heinous," Machado reimagines every episode ofLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naïvely assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgängers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes. Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious,Her Body and Other Partiesswings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.… (mais)

I'm glad I checked her out but the stories are likely too clever for me. They probably mean stuff I can't decipher. They go too many ways for me. I think the audiobook format didn't help, not that the narrator was bad but I think I needed visuals to work my way through the stories since they are not set up in the normal story pattern. I'm in the mood for "normal story" patterns so I'm going to skip the rest of the stories. iirc she had 4 short stories up for consideration in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2018 that's what put her on my radar.
---------------------

~ The Husband Stitch (2014) novelette 3* wow. I am not sure what I read but I was entertained while reading. Her style reminds me quite a bit of Miranda July but maybe a bit more coherent. There was a common thread, or ribbon (hehe) through out the story that we get a resolution to at then end but it's not a full resolution. I can say it was interesting... ~ Inventory (2013) short story 3.5* Interesting. A woman is recounting and in very general terms (not like steamy, more like factual) each person she slept with. The clever part is there is an apocalyptic background enlarging in each recounting. She starts at a very different place (on earth) than where she ends.

~ Mothers (2014) short story DNF

~ Especially Heinous: 272 Views of Law & Order SVU (2013) novella - DNF - Free here: https://theamericanreader.com/especially-heinous-272-views-of-law-order-svu/

~ The Resident (2017) novelette - damn it, got about 75% done. DNF. Too dreamy with sentences that make no sense. Things happened and aren't discussed or explained. And there is an event in her past that obviously is still effecting her and we aren't privy to that. I feel like it will never be revealed. I'm done.

Skipped:
~ Real Women Have Bodies (2017) novelette
~ Eight Bites (2017) short story
~ Difficult at Parties (2012) short story ( )

The ideas in these stories are compelling but the structure is just... missing. ( )

Machado's stories are weird and wonderful, about women, about sexuality. They're the kind of surreal, untraditionally plotted stories that make you wonder what they mean.

All the stories play with form in some way or another. Most are successful, but "Especially Heinous" is the weakest in this respect. It's set up as a list of fictional Law & Order: SVU summaries, and while there's a lot of good stuff in there, it doesn't quite stretch to the nearly 60 pages it takes.

Usually in a short story collection I have to push myself towards the end--my attention span starts to lag. I read this in a day. ( )

Generally, I don't read short stories, but this author's works was compared to Karen Russell whose work I enjoy. This wild compilation of eight stories is a debut collection although individually several have previously been published in periodicals.

The two I enjoyed most were "The Husband Stitch" and "Inventory." The former involved a woman who before she was married had two rules for her dates: one, her sexual partner can not finish inside her and, two, he can not touch the green ribbon, which has been around her neck as long as she can remember." If this second rule is hauntedly familiar, you must have sitting around the same campfire with me.

The second involved a biography of her life told from one sexual encounter to another including the context behind each. I loved her prose in this one which often seemed to me like poetry.

Sometimes the climax of the story left me scratching my head, but even in those short stories, I thought her writing was some of the best I have read. If you are a fan of either reading or writing short stories, I would recommend this collection. ( )

Machado’s writing is so compelling and colorful that I didn’t care that I didn’t always understand what was happening in these stories. She had me with the first story alone, mostly because I’ve been obsessed with the story of the woman with a ribbon around her neck since I read it for the first time in kindergarten in those way too-scary scary stories to tell in the dark. All those horrifying images and that’s the one that’s stayed with me so it’s nice to know it haunted Machado too. I’m looking forward to reading more from her. ( )
