The premise is really cool. But I think Leora did overreact with the entire blank thing. It's to much rage to be true. And the inker thing being a blank was meh. But what bothers me the most is that the stories that are included in the novel aren't original at all. 'Hope' is Pandora's box and 'The Lovers' was the Osiris myth. They are almost identical to the original, except for the characters. At least give them your own twist, if you are going to include them in the novel. ( )

As a tattooed person, I was attracted to the premise. The book, unfortunately, didn't entirely work. For instance, when Leora meets Obel, the master inker she's apprenticed to, she says she's "no good at guessing ages" -- but his "bare arms" are on display, where we know everyone receives annual age marks. Over and over Leora has told us that someone's whole life is visible from their marks, so why can't she see Obel's age at a glance? Also, Are blank and marked seen as religions or races or both? Can a blank person choose to "convert" to marked? Leora suggested to Obel that he could have, but then she's "disgusted" by her "half-blank" heritage, even though she's been marked her whole life. How long ago were the "fairy tale" origin stories meant to take place? What are the odds that, so far past living memory, Leora would still look recognizably like the White Witch in an old illustration?

The story kept me turning pages; the drama is real. But the worldbuilding is weak and has nothing new to say about prejudice. Now that I know this is meant to be the beginning of a series, maybe Broadway will develop the world further with more depth and coherence? **spoiler alert**

An intriguing and well written book with a beautiful cover - yes I did pick it up for that reason 😊 - quite a unique (and grim) tattoo twist, entwined with the widely used dystopian style story. I enjoyed it to a certain degree, the fairy tale style mostly, however felt it could have been a little more detailed and less, for want of a better description, like a shallow rock pool. I wanted more depth, more story, more character development, more. I see there's promise of a second book so we'll see! ( )

Leora lives in a community where all your deeds, good and bad, are tattooed on your skin. But what secrets was her father hiding before he died. And will he be "forgotten" because of his sins? Interesting dystopian fantasy. ( )

In the community of Ink, people wear their stories on their skin. Leora is about to choose her profession and sits for final exams. She's reeling after the death of her beloved father. When she sees a man publicly marked by the new mayor, she has a flashback to a crow tattoo - the sign of the forgotten - on her own father. Fairytales are woven throughout the story as are warnings about the blanks, those in another community that aren't tattooed. The characters were richly created. The book just ended really abruptly, I wished for more explanation, resolution, to see what happened after Leora's decision when she gets a better glimpse at the truth. ( )
