While dealing with a variety of Soviet and captured German projects, the meat of this book is either the travails of the Bereznyak-Isayev BI-1 point-defense interceptor or the trials of the German DFS 346 test machine taken as a spoil of war. To a large degree all the projects examined shared the issue of a lack of knowlege regarding transonic flight conditions and the lethal characteristics of the oxidizer (like the Germans, the Russians turned to nitric acid) used. This is not to mention having to function under the burdens of Stalinist paranoia and the dislocations of invasion. ( )
