"Called a "magnificently crafted story ... brimming with wisdom" by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publication in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage."--Jacket.… (mais)

Nothing extraordinary or super exciting happens in the book but it draws you in right from the beginning. Stegner's writing is impeccable, there's something in his writing which makes the plot and his characters natural. You feel you're reading about people you know. Stegner alternates beteen the present and the past. This device works very well here, especially as you eagerly wait to find out why Sally can't walk. It also helps you understand the characters and the decisions they make. ( )

This was unconventional in the one-sided view of a couple and that the narrator seemed to notice and report odd things about them. I'll have to listen to it again to catch all the nuance, but suffice to say it surprised me and didn't go where I thought it would. ( )

What can I possibly say about this brilliant book? The person tasked with writing the blurb for the back cover must've asked the same question. Must've sat for days staring at the book, wondering how in the world to describe what it's about. Eventually, they gave up and went with this:

A grand, rich, beautifully written novel about a long, not-always-easy friendship between two couples.

Probably handed in their notice along with the blurb. Realized they were not qualified to write book cover blurbs.

Amazon's blurb writer doesn't have any luck either, so how can I possibly tell you "what this book is about"??? I'll do my best. Let's start with the two couples, The Morgans and The Langs.

Larry & Sally Morgan

Young couple from New Mexico have just moved to Madison, Wisconsin where Larry will be a Professor. Sally is three months pregnant. "Entering on their first year as full adults, not preparing any longer but finally into their lives."

Money is very tight. All they can find to rent is a basement apartment they can barely afford on Lake Monona*.

For meals they ate "the stuff that was good for the budget but not especially for the soul."

"In a way, it is beautiful to be young and hard up" Larry tells us. "With the right wife, and I had her, deprivation becomes a game. In the next two weeks we spent a few dollars on white paint and dotted swiss, and were settled."

"We were tender with one another in bed: babes in the woods, lost in a strange indifferent country, a little dispirited, a little scared."

Sid & Charity Lang

Young couple from Cambridge, old families, and money. Sid is also a Professor but wants to be a poet. They have two little boys and Charity, like Sally, is also three months pregnant! But don't roll your eyes. There is no baby-swapping going on. There is no subplot to this pregnancy coincidence. It's just one of the many wonderful surprises that bonds the two couples together.

Larry and Sally met Sid and Charity at the Chairman's tea reception. Larry doesn't remember this as he's bad with names and faces and so he doesn't recognize Charity when he comes home one afternoon and finds her having tea with his wife. He can't believe his luck, meeting these new friends who went to Harvard and Smith!

"And here was this Harvard/Smith woman obviously enjoying cinnamon toast and Lipton's Orange Pekoe in our basement..."

Charity...she is the absolute best! One reviewer described her perfectly: "generous & passionate, also a ball-breaking control freak." Yes!

I can totally relate to Charity, with her notebook and pen, plotting and planning out all the activities and everyone's life. Charity is that friend that makes you feel guilty because you would never think of doing the kind, generous things she does for you. And no, this book is not about some evil motive behind her generosity. Charity's kindness and compassion are 100% real and genuine.

Larry and Sally go to a dinner party at Sid & Charity's. Their hosts are larger than life. Megawatt smiles and personalities to match. Larry describes it as the dinner party that would change their lives.

We follow these two couples over the years. What fun they have!!! Parties and picnics and sailing on the lake. Discussions of book, poetry, music. Long hikes, midnight walks. Family history. New babies. All the ups and downs. Good times and bad times. Always there for each other, through thick and thin. BFFs. And the tragedies...oh the tragedies...

What is this book about? It's about getting to know these four people inside and out. Witnessing everything they go through together over the course of their lives. There's no plot, really. No one is having an affair. It's just about people and what makes them be the kind of people they are. What binds them together? What makes them stick together as couples and as friends?

"You can plan all you want to. You can lie in your morning bed and fill whole notebooks with schemes and intentions. But within a single afternoon, within hours or minutes, everything you plan and everything you have fought to make yourself can be undone as a slug is undone when salt is poured on him. And right up to the moment when you find yourself dissolving into foam you can still believe you are doing fine."

“When you remember today," Larry asks his wife during a couple's trip to Italy, "what will you remember best, the spring countryside, and the company of friends, or Piero’s Christ and that workman with the mangled hand?”

She thought a minute. “All of it,” she said. “it wouldn’t be complete or real if you left out any part of it, would it?”

“Go to the head of the class,” I said.

I was drawn to this book first by A.O. Scott's recent appreciation of Stegner's novels in The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/36R0h09), then the general description of this particular book "about two couples who form a fast — and lifelong — friendship that spans decades, from mid-Depression to grandparent-hood. Once I started, however, I did not look forward to its ending.

The scenes set in academia are as good as any I found in Stoner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoner_(novel)), and Crossing to Safety is as entertaining and heart-warming as John Williams' 1985 novel is heart-wrenching. Time and again the narrator tells the reader that though we may expect adultery or some other modern plot twist to upset the goodness of this friendship, it just didn't happen that way.

What does happen, however difficult to imagine, is a growing, deepening, mutually beneficial and loving relationship among and between two couples: Larry (the narrator) and Sally Morgan and Sid and Charity Lang. But "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice" it is not.

Perhaps my first taste of Stegner's fiction will turn out to be the best, but I'm determined to find out for myself. Angles of Repose is next.

I could give all to Time except-except

What I myself have held. But why declare

The things forbidden that while the Customs slept

I have crossed to Safety with? For I am There

And what I would not part with I have kept.
