Sergeant Reckless was a neglected horse that a group of U.S. Marines found during the Korean War. They fixed her up and she became an integral part of a military operation and even earned herself a rank. It's such a sweet story and humans and animals working together. I love stories like this. There's lots to learn in a book like this, not only about Sergeant Reckless, but of the war and how things unfolded. Fantastic book! ( ) A great story to introduce young readers to the Korean War, Sergeant Reckless is the tale of a young mare adopted by U.S. Marines to help carry ammunition. She proved her bravery and devotion, marching into battle time and again, and became the only animal to ever hold a military rank. Includes Author’s Note, Selected Biography. A group of US Marines fighting in the Korean War were exhausted! They needed a mule to help them carry the heavy ammunition uphill to the new cannon nicknamed "reckless". A small red mare who was skinny and not impressive was all they could find. They put "Private Reckless" into training. She had to learn to kneel, retreat and to follow. She gobbled up any treats they gave her and she especially liked chocolate! Finally she was reading to carry ammunition up the hill. She LOVED food and had a big appetite. She worked hard in many fights, but the Battle of Outpost Vegas was her most important mission. It changed the course of the war and she was a key element to their success! After the war, they managed to get her shipped to the US. What a great story of the bond between animals and humans. The illustrations are intricate and detailed and the reader comes to know Sergeant Reckless' personality and the bond between the marines and the horse is unmistakable. Students in grades 1-5 will enjoy reading about this hard working horse. When a group of US Marines fighting in the Korean War found a bedraggled little mare, they wondered if she could be trained to as a packhorse. They had no idea that the skinny, underfed horse had one of the biggest and bravest hearts they'd ever known. And one of the biggest appetites! Soon Reckless showed herself more than willing to carry ammunition too heavy for the soldiers to haul. As cannons thundered and shells flew through the air, she marched into battle -- again and again -- becoming the only animal ever to officially hold military rank and receive two Purple Hearts.
