The overwhelming thought I had when I was ceremoniously dipping my back tire in the Atlantic Ocean was, "This is a stupid idea." At that moment, I was convinced I could not bike across the entire United States. Anxiety and fear told me: no way. But if I learned anything from the trip that did indeed get completed, it's that we are capable of far more than we think. In reality, all that's required is to pick a path, commit to it and then just begin. What I discovered on the 3,865-mile journey is that people want to help people. Angels are everywhere. SUMMARY
Crazy Coach on a Bike is about the adventure of a lifetime. It's a journey that started with the dip of a back bike tire in Atlantic Ocean and ended 70 days later at the Pacific Ocean. A selfless 3,865 mile bike journey by a crazy tennis coach who wanted to raise awareness and money for cancer during the heat of the summer of 2016.
Kevin Record is a 56 year old high-energy high school tennis coach and journalism teacher at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida. Record writes that his motivation for this trip was because life is to short not to be on fire for something, and he is on fire for this. He dedicates his ride to five very special people who have battled cancer or are still battling cancer. These people, and all who fight cancer are his heros. They are why he rides. Record writes that cancer is a bully and doing a tiny part to slay the monster is probably one of the most meaningful things he has done.
Record chronicled each one of the 70 days of his journey during the course of the trip in a blog that was read by hundreds and hundreds of friends. This book recreates that blog that entertained so many people. It includes Kevin's pre-journey preparations, special dedications and includes pictures for each day that highlights the unique and beautiful landscape his passed and the many friends and angels that he met along the way.
REVIEW
Full disclosure--I have known Kevin Record for eight years. When he told me he was going to check this item off his bucket list I was a little nervous for him. I followed his blog closely during his journey, and was so excited for him when he got to San Francisco. I was doubly excited when he turned his blog into a book. This book! All proceeds for the book go to help fight cancer!
Kevin's journey predictably started with some frustration, getting lost, going in the wrong direction, losing his debit card and a visit from the police and that was only in the first 225 miles. You can feel his nerves and frustration during those first couple of days. In fact, his writing is so open and honest that you become pretty familiar with Kevin's state of mind during his entire trip, whether he was happy, frustrated, exhausted, angry or elated you know it. His vivid descriptions, emotive writing and self-deprecating humor left his blog readers anxiously waiting each morning for the next installment of his journey.
The most interesting thing about this book is in the description of the many strangers or angels as Kevin calls them, that he met along the TransAmerican and the Western Bike Trail that offered help and support, asking for little or nothing in return. Angels like the Kramers who opened up their beautiful log cabin in Telluride, Co, to him. Or Cassie who let him stay in a trailer for free in Hite, Utah. Buck and Ellen in Sapinero, Utah invited Kevin to their house for dinner of steak and potatoes with chocolate ice cream for dessert. Jeff took Kevin for a boat ride on the Blue Mesa Reservoir. There were countless strangers who became lifesaving angels that offered him food and lodging, water, and snacks all along the way. Angels like Ray, the hotel maintenance guy in Kansas who dropped everything to fixed Kevin's tire. Crazy Coach on a Bike gives us a true taste of the kindness of strangers found all across the country.
One of Kevin's best stories is when his rear derailer cable snapped in Dighton Kansas, and he was only able to peddle in one gear. The nearest bike shop was 240 miles away, in Pueblo, Colorado. He battled onward in one gear for three days, though Kansas before finally arriving in Pueblo on July 3rd. While the bike was being repaired the bike shop got a call from another angel. John of Holyoke Colorado, a total stranger who had heard about Kevin's journey and was calling to pay for all of Kevin's bike repairs. Wow! Kevin's mission to have an impact on cancer was having a tremendous impact on peoples generosity. He ended up raising over $12,700 for cancer.
There are numerous interesting stories about other cyclists that Kevin met along the way, giving us a better understanding of the great folks out there fighting for a cause and those fighting the headwinds. Kevin loved talking to the other cyclists he passed. They exchanged tips and they all motivated each other to keep on going. Kevin made a point of never losing sight of what his was doing on his horse, as he referred to his bike. He actively searched out the people who have been affected by cancer in every city and town he stopped, These heroic stories of fighters and survivors puts this whole trip in perspectives for Kevin and us.
When you combine Kevin Record's coffee addiction, a horse that is a bike, three flat tires, a few mechanical difficulties, strong headwinds, beautiful scenery, gorgeously sunrises, a few dozen heroes and innumerable lifesaving angels, you have what makes for a pretty great story. Kevin's mantra throughout his meaningful journey is Beat Cancer, I think he made a difference. Crazy Coach on a Bike is totally worth the read. ( )
