A Shifter U Tale A smitten coyote isn't the only one stalking Buffalo Bill. A buffalo walks into a cafe. Sounds like the start of a bad joke, but for coyote shifter Donnie Granger, it's the beginning of an obsession. Donnie is a little hyperactive and a lot distractible, except when it comes to William. Arrrgh, this book! It started out so good: cute, funny, shifters, bad guys, manly men - all the good things. Then bam, everything I hated in MF romance. The lack of communication, the Alpha male going all protect the poor, young helpless love interest. Not talking, not explaining just shutting them down and shutting them out. Then, of course the love interest has to be all "I'm not a child, I am not helpless, I can be trusted" then goes off a does the exact thing to prove the are TSTL.

It is not a bad book, it is well written and entertaining, I know a lot of people will enjoy it. It just pushed all of my buttons and not in a good way ( )

What a hoot! That’s the best way I can describe my reaction to this hilariously funny novel about shifters, mysterious goings-on that lead to stalking, and characters who really deserve to be together as a couple, yet don’t seem to manage to get their act together for the longest time. ‘Stalking Buffalo Bill’ is the first in a new series set at Shifter U, a university in a contemporary world where shifters are not known to humans and “band together” at certain universities and places where they feel comfortable.

The main characters are Donnie, a very young and impulsive coyote shifter, and William, a seemingly boring buffalo shifter who is currently a professor of sociology but has more than one secret in his past. Their meeting and interaction sets the scene for some very interesting relationship building – if you can call their somewhat awkward fumblings that. But, as is slowly revealed, there is a whole lot more to the situation, and while the story is not a “serious” shifter novel in the traditional sense (if there is such a thing), it has all of the elements I like about a paranormal read: an interesting world, secrets, danger, threats, a passionate romance, and a plot that twists more than once. Add a wonderful sense of humor, and voilà, you have a whole new type of shifter world.

To call Donnie “hyperactive and distractible” is probably an understatement. Donnie is all over the map, and before his interest in the mysterious William focuses his not-always-planned attempts to find love, he isn’t very mature at all. Not that this radically changes when he does begin to interact with the “manly man” of his dreams, but there is a gradual change away from activity-over-thought to a more strategic view of life. Trying to save William from the thugs who are after him turns out to be a full-time job, and Donnie relishes the sense of adventure that gives him almost as much as his increasingly heated encounters with the man of his dreams.

William is almost the complete opposite of Donnie. He is much older, settled, a creature of habit… at least, that is what he makes everyone believe. But there are hidden depths to this fascinating guy, and the more information emerges as he fights the shadows from his past, the more I liked him. William is trying to cut the ties with his former existence so he can settle down, but the criminals he fought as an undercover agent won’t give up easily. William does his best to protect Donnie, but the stubborn coyote is not easy to get rid of… no matter how much William tries to keep his distance.

Donnie and William, as much as they share an incredibly strong attraction to each other, are not an easy fit. Mostly this is because William has secrets he wants to keep and Donnie intends to get at those secrets no matter what it takes. But it is also because they are very different types of men, and it takes a while for each of them to adjust to the truth: they are made for each other if only they can figure out how they fit together. An extremely entertaining and emotionally very rewarding process, as far as I am concerned!

If you like shifter worlds that mesh almost seamlessly with our reality – well, except for the shifter part, if you want to find out more about a buffalo shifter who used to work undercover and thinks he needs no help from a coyote shifter who does not know the meaning of the word “no” once he is interested in a guy, and if you’re looking for a read that is as suspenseful and mysterious as it is hilarious and entertaining, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. May there be many more in this series – and may they be published soon!
