I really enjoyed reading Song of the Wild: A First Book of Animals, and I can see myself putting it in my classroom one day. From the illustrations to the clever poetry lines, this book is beautiful. Each page has a different poem about a different animal. The stories send interesting messages about the importance of animals and how they contribute to make the earth what it is. The word choice of the author is my favorite part of each poem; she is very descriptive with every topic and the imagery is wonderful. For example, one of her poems reads, “Velvet soft and gleaming white, the barn owl flies across the night.” It is almost like you can feel the texture of the owl and see its glowing color. I also enjoyed the illustrations surrounding the poems. They are filled with texture and color and help the reader to use their imagination even more. I would give this book a 5/5 and encourage my future students to read this poetry. ( )
