Essays in honor of Dr. Allan Coppedge from Matt Friedeman, Dennis Kinlaw, Robert Coleman, John Oswalt, Timothy Tennent, Chris Bounds, and others."God designed life to be lived in a certain way," Al Coppedge has taught his students for years. The challenge, according to the good professor, is to recognize that "The sooner He's directing our life the better we will be able to get His best." His best involves being the disciple God wants us to be and, consequentially, turning about and making disciples. This Dr. Allan Coppedge has most admirably done. But he probably won't rest until you, dear reader, do it, too.I have wanted to compile this festschrift honoring Al Coppedge for a long time. A few years ago, he had a serious heart attack and I thought that day that perhaps we had missed the opportunity to honor this mentor to so many. Later, a friend started a similar project but lost momentum; to then initiate another attempt seemed a potential collegial affront. It began to look like a well-intentioned endeavor would never came to fruition. But one day, late last year, a voice seemed to say, "Now." My friend whose similar project was stalled gave the green light to proceed.The first task as editor of such a volume is to ask, "Who are potential writers?" While I am sure I unintentionally omitted some people who should have been included, for the most part I identified cherished colleagues, friends, and family of Dr. Coppedge who had the ability to produce an essay within the necessary time frame. Many of these contributors are some of the most cherished names in the Wesleyan world and certainly the Asbury community. I assembled a "dream list" while resigning myself to the likelihood that not all of them would be able to participate.I was wrong.With one solicitation email and a couple days' response time, nearly everyone I had contacted enthusiastically reciprocated: Coleman, Oswalt, Tennent, Ury, Bounds and on the list goes. Cricket Albertson even edited a sermon on the topic of discipleship from her grandfather and Coppedge's father-in-law, Dr. Dennis Kinlaw (whose funeral is tomorrow, as I write this).It was the easiest job I ever accomplished; gathering this noteworthy and prominent list of participants required little more than a single electronic missive. Everyone I contacted wanted to honor this man. They couldn't seem to say "yes" fast enough. Potential contributors were not confined to the academic community, though many are professors in Christian higher education. Allan Coppedge didn't disciple people merely for college and graduate level schools nor is discipleship a primarily academic undertaking. So it seemed appropriate, in celebration of Dr. Coppedge's legacy, to broaden the perspectives of this volume beyond the academy.The result is a wide continuum of styles. Authors were asked to choose a topic on the theme of discipleship. As editor, I have attempted to cluster the articles to enhance the continuity of the reader's experience.
