In his first case since he left the LAPD's Open Unsolved Unit for the prestigious Homicide Special squad, Harry Bosch is called out to investigate a murder that may have chilling consequences for national security. A doctor with access to a dangerous radioactive substance is found murdered in the trunk of his car. Retracing his steps, Harry learns that a large quantity of radioactive cesium was stolen shortly before the doctor's death. With the cesium in unknown hands, Harry fears the murder could be part of a terrorist plot to poison a major American city. Soon, Bosch is in a race against time, not only against the culprits, but also against the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI (in the form of Harry's one-time lover Rachel Walling), who are convinced that this case is too important for the likes of the LAPD. It is Bosch's job to prove all of them wrong.… (mais)

Not a bad plot and in general the writing is ok, but the book has strange weaknesses. First, our hero has depth while other main characters are barely sketched in, when at least one of them should be deeper. Second, the author seems to run out of steam at the end; no real denouement, with at least one silly loose end. The author seems to realise this, adding an weird dialogue between writer and his character, for no good reason and with no apparent value. Disappointing. ( )

The Outlook opens with Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch recently assigned to a new unit: Homicide Special which handles cases with "any sort of political, celebrity or media attachment"or which are "particularly difficult and time-consuming --that would invariably stay active like a hobby."Bosch's new supervisor, Larry Gandle, has sent him and his new partner, Ignacio (Iggy) Ferras, out on their first assignment to the overlook above the Mulholland Dam where a victim apparently has been killed execution style -- two shots to the back of the head.
The death of the victim, Dr. Stanley Kent, a medical physicist, has drawn in the FBI because of his access to radioactive materials. Rachael Walling, sometime lover of Harry Bosch, is handling the investigation for the Bureau. Also brought into the case is LAPD's newly formed Office of Homeland Security (OHS) headed by Captain Don Hadley, known as "Done Badly" by the rank and file because of his ineptitude.
Harry's and Ferras's murder case is nearly overwhelmed by the FBI's terrorism investigation. The novel ends in a rush of clarifications and leaves Ferris wounded and Bosch suffering from probable radiation poisoning but with a refreshed relationship with Rachael.

Basis of Bosch Season 6
Review of the Little, Brown & Co. hardcover (2007)

After my recent re-read of Harry Bosch #1 The Black Echo: Special Edition (1992/2020) in its new narration by Bosch actor Titus Welliver, I've looked over my shelves for some other possible re-reads of earlier Michael Connelly books. The Overlook (Harry Bosch #13) was a good candidate as it was the primary basis for the plot of the recent Bosch TV Series Season 6 (April 2020).

In book form, The Overlook is a much more streamlined case than the 10-episode TV version which has several other plotlines, including the Daisy Clayton cold-case from Dark Sacred Night. Harry chases down the clues in 12 hours, barely stopping for anything along the way. The subplots and ending are not exactly the same as the TV version, so one is not a spoiler for the other (although several plot points do match in both). ( )

Michael Connelly is a great writer. His Harry Bosch series is consistently entertaining, and "The Overlook" is no exception.

Dr. Stanley Kent is murdered. Bosch is called out to investigate. As Bosch delves deeper into Kent's life, he finds strange contradictions and suspects that this is not just a simple murder investigation. When his former lover and FBI agent Rachel Walling is assigned to the case, Bosch knows there's a lot more going on than he's being told.

I loved that I did not see the twist coming. Didn't see it at all. Also what I really like about Connelly's writing is that, although there is the typical conflict between FBI and local police, the dynamics are not exaggerated or made to seem tiresomely stereotypical, as happens all too often in many novels.

I was thoroughly entertained by this book, and it was a quick read. ( )
