Good story, badly told. Emotionally flat prose, no character depth, cliches, lots of flat out telling instead of showing. Very disappointing considering all the great reviews. Started as a screenplay, should have have stayed a screenplay. I received this book as a Christmas gift and I’m so glad I finally managed to read it. Every time I come across these books that take place during Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, I think there isn’t possibly more I can learn but I’m always promptly put in my place. This is based on the true story of Lale, the man tasked with placing the numbers on the forearms of incoming prisoners at Auschwitz. I simply cannot imagine being put in Lale’s position of having to forcibly tattoo people or be forced to work hard labor just to survive. The way he took the negative situation and managed to save as many as he could in the smallest of ways at a very large risk to himself was inspirational at the least and very often nerve wracking. I’m so glad that this one had a rather happy ending though because I don’t think I could have emotionally handled anything else. Definitely a book I would recommend again and again to anyone that loves historical fiction. mediocre. Overhyped. Readable but nothing exceptional. "In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism--but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive. One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first encounter, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her"--Dust jacket flap. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
