Perhaps 4.5, but I'm rounding up because I really enjoyed it. I wasn't as emotionally drawn in by the characters and story as I would have liked, but it was definitely a joy to read. I can't wait for the others in the series! =D

2nd read- I'm rereading the first two in preparation for the third to drop this week. I enjoy the premise of the brothers' backstory despite it being unrealistic, (four people all connected to one man, born separately but all at the very same time? really?? ( )

This was super unique! I haven't read a ton of historicals before but this was definitely very different than all of them and I really enjoyed it. It made me really want to read a lot more from this author because I thought the writing style was also very unique and even though it took me a bit to get used to it, I ended up really liking this.

I'm used to historical romances having not as much plot as having some of the other romances I read but I thought this book had a really interesting plot. I think this really stems from having some really compelling characters. I think a mark of good historical romance is creating female characters who are unsatisfied in having a traditional role or being what we might expect of a woman in that era without making it seem historically inaccurate and I think that was done very effectively here. This plot would not have been possible if Felicity had been a less compelling character.

I loved most of the characters in this book but in particular I loved Felicity. Her lock-picking skills were so interesting and made for very interesting character moments. I loved the way she was written as knowing what she wanted and even going after it a bit but being held back for propriety reasons. The sadness she felt about feeling like she no longer belonged in society was very understandable and relatable and really laid the groundwork so well for the journey she went on. I thought her love interest, Devil, was great as well. At first I was hesitant, because his name is Devil, but Maclean did such an excellent job of indicating the respect Devil had for Felicity without seeming ahistorical. That characterization made it easy to understand why Felicity would fall in love with him and made the relationship so real. I also really like reading historical romances set in England that doesn't only have nobility as the main characters so I really enjoyed that Devil only had small relation to nobility. His character is all the more interesting because he lives in the lower class area of the city.

That background also made for very interesting interactions with the world. I thought this world was so fully realized. Both Devil's interaction with his family and and the people who work for him and Felicity's interactions with her family and the nobility around her make the characters actions so much more real. I thought the way their relationship to each other developed was so natural and I really appreciated that the conflicts in the relationship stemmed from actual, difficult to solve problems rather than just a lack of communication. I also really liked that in this story, Felicity was the one who was a noble because it gave them both mostly equal power when it came to the relationship which I think can be hard to accomplish with historical romance. Although I've really enjoyed a lot of what I've read in this sub-genre, it can sometimes be hard to ignore the fact that women's lives were controlled in a lot of ways but giving Felicity a noble family and making Devil a person who likes that she wants control gives her a lot of that power back.

I really enjoyed this book. Not quite enough to give it five starts because it did take me a bit to get into the story but I definitely want to read the next book in this series. I've already requested it from my library. I will definitely be checking out more of Maclean's books. I listen to the podcast that she hosts, Fated Mates, as well and if you like podcasts I would recommend it! ( )

It got a little melodramatic in a few spots, but those moments mostly stood out because the rest of the book was so well balanced. ( )

Although it took me several attempts of starting to read this novel since its release, I really enjoyed this. I love it when the supposed brightness of the ton is contrasted with the darkness of the rookery. I appreciated how convoluted the siblings' past seemed until I got all the clues together in my head. Felicity and Dev were the perfect complements to each other. ( )
