(Read my short review on the whole series here)

*3.5 stars*

Trigger warnings: burned bodies, severed limbs, torture, gore (a little bit morbid than the first two in the series, but not so much that I can’t stand)

A carnival on a cruise that promised wonders and chaos. A dream turned nightmare when passengers went missing and killed. An affair with the unpredictable ringmaster...

Audrey Rose had solved the case of the Impaler, conquered her fears, and ready to start a fresh new year, hoping for a great start. But life is never that easy, isn’t it? Unfortunately, before she landed in America, she had to survive another murderer case on the cruise ship.

“Crime scenes were filled with their own sort of sleight of hand. Murderers tried fabricating scenes, manipulating them to cover their true intentions and identity.”

I love how Kerri utilized this characteristic of sleight of hands in this story, which makes this book special from the first two. It also reminds me of [b:Caraval|27883214|Caraval (Caraval, #1)|Stephanie Garber|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1465563623l/27883214._SY75_.jpg|45697227], another of my favorite series. Solving a murderer in a carnival with all kinds of weapons for shows is a new level of challenge, even for Thomas and Audrey. As the “distractions” from the carnival become more and more out of control—threatening the essence of their relationship itself—Audrey Rose must learn to see through the dazzling magic of sleight of hand, and avoid losing her heart in the process.

Escaping from Houdini explores the relationship between Thomas and Audrey Rose on a deeper level. While you’ll see more sweet kisses and romantic moments, their love will also be put to the test. In the promise of wonder and freedom of the carnival, is it a true possibility or just a pretty illusion?

The downside of this story is the love triangle. I simply couldn’t stand this trope and I was yelling at Audrey Rose throughout the book. I believe this book would be even better without it and just be a proper mystery. That being said, something good did come out of it—the tricky situation shed new light on Thomas Cresswell. Now I finally understand all the hype about him, and I’m falling in love with him myself. And the ending… well, let’s just say the stakes were even higher, and I was tearing up. (I don’t want to spoil the excitement for you.)

Overall, Escaping from Houdini is an adventure promising more romance, broken heart, and death. If you are here for the mystery, you might like it less, since it focuses more on the romance, but it’s still enjoyable. If you are here for romance and imagination, I believed you’ll not be disappointed. ( )

3.25* While I enjoy the mysteries of this series, everything feels overly dramatic. It may be because of how the narrator reads the story though. She tends to over read the role as if she is a drama actress on stage, and unfortunately I don't really appreciate dramas. The strange cheating but not really cheating thing that was going on during this book had me a little irritated as well - it wasn't necessary and rarely do I see a fake cheating subplot written well - especially in YA. I probably should have stopped reading the series after the last one, however, I enjoy the historical fiction aspect of this series. ( )

I always love Audrey Rose!! Another great book in the series. Thomas is just as charming as ever and sooo understanding its a little ridiculous. I mean what man would really be that understanding about his intended spending so much time with another man?? Lol but it definitely fits his character. Great mystery as well which is to be expected from this series. I look forward to reading the last book in the series soon! ( )

Not as good as books 1 & 2 but was still entertaining. ( )

Book Three of the Stalking Jack the Ripper series, finds another career murderer, but they are now on the high seas and no way to escape.

Audrey Rose and Thomas are on their way to New York to work a case with Audrey Rose's uncle. Every night, the Midnight Carnival has a new show that stops the heart. These are tricks and sleight of hand never seen before, where some passengers leave, too afraid to stay. Bodies begin turning up--with tarot cards attached. Audrey Rose decides to go "undercover" and infiltrate from within. The show's grand master would like nothing more than to lure Ms. Wadsworth from Mr. Cresswell. The missing people, the dead bodies, and the mysteries grand master lead to a dangerous finale that is darker than the other two books.

Out of the four books, this was my least favorite because I like the banter between Thomas and Audrey Rose. I don't like them separated or Thomas questioning their relationship. The end was rather stressful as well! ( )
