Fear Street # 91 Gretchen Davies and her friends have prepared the ULTIMATE surprise birthday party for Cindy. They're going to break into her house, abduct her with perhaps a burlap sack over her head, and then drive over to Fear Lake with her presumably sobbing in the trunk of someone's car. With friends like these.... Shockingly, this plan goes pretty well. That is, until Patrick Munson flashes a gun and freaks the other kidnappers out, spoiling the game, and is forced to explain why he's pointing a gun at Cindy's head. Apparently there's a killer on the loose who has already killed some teens. The news is being kept quiet to prevent panic, but Patrick's dad is a cop in Waynesbridge so he has good intel. And access to guns! None of this explains why the gun was pointed at Cindy, but when a killer is on the loose is not the time to talk about gun control. The group decide that too much work has been put into the party to give up now. Besides, the killer couldn't possibly linger in Shadyside, and if he did, would he choose to hide on Fear Island? This may turn out to be a memorable party for all the wrong reasons. I couldn't get into the terrible relationship dynamics of this one. There's often very little reason to root for Stine's protagonists, but everyone was pretty unlikable here. It made me wish the killer would get a move on already. This was merely OK. It is Cindy's birthday and her friends want to give her a night to remember so they literally kidnap her so that they can all have a good time without parents or chaperones. They all decide to go to Fire Island and have the party there. When they get there they find out there is an escaped prisoner that is running loose and they all decide to take precautions.
I read this in one sitting as there is quite a bit of mystery along with some twists to the story which I found to be pleasantly surprised. Giving it three stars for keeping me entertained! ( )
