"Following their adventures in The Bear and the Nightingale and The Girl in the Tower, Vasya and Morozko return in this stunning conclusion to the bestselling Winternight Trilogy, battling enemies mortal and magical to save both Russias, the seen and the unseen. Reviewers called Katherine Arden's novels The Bear and the Nightingale and The Girl in the Tower"lyrical,""emotionally stirring," and"utterly bewitching." The Winternight Trilogy introduced an unforgettable heroine, Vasilisa Petrovna, a girl determined to forge her own path in a world that would rather lock her away. Her gifts and her courage have drawn the attention of Morozko, the winter-king, but it is too soon to know if this connection will prove a blessing or a curse. Now Moscow has been struck by disaster. Its people are searching for answers--and for someone to blame. Vasya finds herself alone, beset on all sides. The Grand Prince is in a rage, choosing allies that will lead him on a path to war and ruin. A wicked demon returns, stronger than ever and determined to spread chaos. Caught at the center of the conflict is Vasya, who finds the fate of two worlds resting on her shoulders. Her destiny uncertain, Vasya will uncover surprising truths about herself and her history as she desperately tries to save Russia, Morozko, and the magical world she treasures. But she may not be able to save them all"--"Now, in the conclusion to this powerful trilogy, Moscow has been struck by disaster. Its people are searching for answers--and someone to blame. A satisfying conclusion to the Winternight Trilogy. This book starts following a huge fire that burned much of Moscow, which was accidentally caused by protagonist, Vasya to save her cousin, the Grand Prince. The hateful priest Konstantin Nikonovich whips up a mob to burn Vasya as a witch. She narrowly escapes with her life through the magical realm of Midnight, suffering a tragic loss along the way. Medved (the Bear) has been set free by his twin Morozko (the Winter King) to save Vasya, but Morozko has disappeared with the approaching summer. Meanwhile, Medved is creating havoc and inciting war between Russia and the vast Tatar armies. Vasya, protector of the realm, uses all of her prodigious powers to save her family and kindred spirits, such as domovoi, Chyerti and others, such as the wonderful mushroom spirit dubbed Ded Grib (Grandfather Mushroom), eventually leading to the famous historical Battle of Kulikovo.

Arden has done an excellent job integrating Russian folklore, fairy tales and history. Along the way, we meet other iconic Russian folklore characters, such as Baba Yaga, Polunochnitsa (Lady Midnight), Pozhar (firebird/golden mare.) The battle between Medved and Morozko, and their relationship with Vasya are a delight. ( )

A magical sucker punch of a finals with great victories and tragic loses both. ( )

Absolutely without a doubt one of the best books ever. I am at a loss of words to describe this trilogy which others have called “lyrical,” “emotionally stirring,” and “utterly bewitching.” It's all that and more and book 3 has some laugh out loud moments. Vasya and Morzoko are two characters you will never forget. The supporting cast is just as endearing and one of my favorites was a little mushroom spirit. As much as I wanted to know how it all would end, it was bittersweet to leave behind this magical story. Truly one of the best trilogies I have ever read. ( )

Almost made it to my DNF list. I'm so disappointed. Vasya was so incredibly annoying, the book dragged, and Konstantin, who could have been SUCH A COOL CHARACTER, was not given his due. One star for actually, finally, finishing the story. Dear lord. ( )

It might have taken a year and a half after reading the first of these books, but I’m really, really glad I returned to this trilogy. ( )
