"Much anticipated by fans of Doctor Who both old and new, Big Finish are delighted to welcome Alex Kingston back again to reprise her River Song character first seen in 2008 on TV. Aside from her iconic turn in Doctor Who, Alex Kingston is well known in both the UK and US for her regular roles in E.R., Arrow, Upstairs Downstairs, and The Knock. In series three, River seeks to save the fifth incarnation of her husband the Doctor (Peter Davison) from Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber) - who just because she's killed him once, doesn't mean to stop trying. 3.1 - The Lady in the Lake by Nev Fountain. On Terminus Prime, clients choose their own means of demise. Something exciting, meaningful, or heroic to end it all. But when River discovers that there are repeat customers, she knows something more is going on. She begins to uncover a cult with worrying abilities. Its members can apparently cheat death, and that's not all they have in common with River. 3.2 - A Requiem for the Doctor by Jac Rayner. River has joined the Doctor and his friend Brooke on their travels, and they stop off in 18th century Vienna. Brooke thinks history is dull. Until people start dying. Mozart's legacy is not just his music. River has more than one mystery to solve before a killer is let loose on the people of Vienna - and on the Doctor. 3.3 - My Dinner with Andrew by John Dorney. Welcome, Mesdames et Messieurs, to The Bumptious Gastropod. The most exclusive, most discreet dining experience outside the universe. For the restaurant exists beyond spacetime itself, and the usual rules of causality do not apply. Anything could happen. It is here that the Doctor has a date. With River Song. And with death. 3.4 - The Furies by Matt Fitton. Stories of the Furies abound across the cosmos: vengeful spirits hounding guilty souls to death. Madame Kovarian taught them to a child raised in fear, trained to kill, and placed inside a spacesuit. Kovarian knows the universe's greatest threat, the Doctor must be eliminated. An assassin was created for that purpose. But if Melody Pond has failed, Kovarian will simply have to try again." --Amazon.… (mais)

Long story short: This is a very strong box set and will be particularly rewarding for fans who have watched Series 6 of New Who (the season beginning with the episode “The Impossible Astronaut”).

Short story long: reviews of individual stories in the box set

The Lady in the Lake (5 stars): On Terminus Prime, paying clients can choose to end their lives in one of many imaginative scenarios, something along the lines of a holodeck; for example, they may wish to perish nobly in a fictional battle, or get roasted by a dragon while rescuing a princess. So it’s not the sort of business where you’d expect to find repeat customers. And yet River has found this is the case… what’s the secret behind it? I loved this story—it was my favourite in the box set. It’s full of humour and pathos and time-twistiness. Kevin was an amusing character, and I liked the tie-in to the Eleventh Doctor, specifically to Demon’s Run. This plants the seed that blooms throughout the rest of the box set. And without saying too much, I liked that this story nodded significantly to the fact that the Doctor can look like ANYBODY.

A Requiem for the Doctor (3.5 stars): River meets her “fifth husband” (aka Peter Davison’s Doctor), who is travelling with a companion named Brooke. Brooke is suspicious of this interloper and jealous of River’s easy familiarity with adventure and time travel. The three of them end up in Vienna shortly after Mozart’s death to solve the mystery of the real ending to his Requiem Mass in D minor. Naturally, aliens are involved. The story itself was more of a 3 for me, with the extra half-star for the twistiness of the ending that carries us eventually into the third and fourth stories of the set.

My Dinner with Andrew (4 stars): You can’t get more timey-wimey than The Bumptious Gastropod, a restaurant that exists outside of ordinary spacetime. So when River hears a rumour that the Doctor (Peter Davison) actually *dies* at this restaurant, she does what she can to preserve the timeline and save her husband. The maitre d’ (who has a particularly outrageous French accent that I found amusing) is pretty good at juggling people’s past and future selves, but he’ll have his work cut out for him on this job. I enjoyed this story—I am a sucker for a contorted-timeline story where people have to avoid meeting their other selves. There is a definite nod to The Impossible Astronaut, which may constitute a spoiler, but with these kinds of stories the real fun is in the how, rather than the what. I also liked the Restaurant at the End of the Universe vibes. This story ends on a cliffhanger that leads directly into the fourth story of the set.

The Furies (4 stars): In this final story of Series 3, River is dragged back to her past with Madame Kovarian, who set up the events that we witnessed in The Impossible Astronaut. Madame Kovarian is determined to see the Doctor dead, whatever his incarnation, and if River can’t do the job for her, she has some other recruits to call on. I’d probably rate this more of a 3.75 than a 4, but it works well as a continuation of My Dinner with Andrew and by virtue of its strong ties to Series 6 of Doctor Who. ( )
