Polly Diamond is a wordsmith. She. Loves. Words. When she discovers a book that can not only write back to her but alter reality, she begins to change her room, her house, even her little sister! Only some very clever writing can return her life to "normal" again. Polly Diamond and the Magic Book is the first in a planned series of transitional chapter books. Polly is biracial, though her ethnicity is never discussed in the text. As Polly is particularly fond of words, she discusses similes, prefixes, and many other parts of speech. While it is clear that Polly is meant to teach about language in general, the book is still funny and engaging enough to be read without the grammar agenda. Sweet illustrations on every page in combination with the writing will remind readers of Ivy Bean. Educators should note that a Common-Core Aligned Teacher Guide is available from the publisher. Recommended! ( )

It was a light and easy read. The artwork was favorably decent.

I did like the multicultural concept of the characters, and big sis to little sister. The story itself was fairly decent.

I received a complimentary copy to give a review. ( )

I gave this book to my niece to review so I could see it through her eyes. We both thought it was a cute story and enjoyed it very much. It was a great book for her to read on her own. The words were big enough and easy enough for her to get through, while still holding her interest as she went along. ( )

Polly Diamond receives a beautiful turquoise journal in the mail, and when she writes in it, it writes back - it's a magic book! Polly tries to use it to solve what she sees as the problems in her house, but ends up wanting everything back the way it was.

This fun chapter book shows the power of imagination featuring its unassumingly diverse main character. ( )
