A thrilling true survival story that follows one of America's most beloved presidents, John F. Kennedy, as he fought to save his crew after a deadly shipwreck in the Pacific during World War II. In September 1941, young Jack Kennedy was appointed an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After completing training and eager to serve, he volunteered for combat duty in the Pacific and was appointed commander of PT 109. On August 2, 1943, Kennedy's PT 109 and two others were on a night mission to ambush an enemy supply convoy when they were surprised by a massive Japanese destroyer. The unsuspecting Americans had only seconds to react as the Japanese captain turned his ship to ram directly into Kennedy's. PT 109 was cut in half by the collision, killing two of Kennedy's 12 crewmen and wounding several others in the explosion. In Harm's Way is a biography focused mostly on John F. Kennedy's service in the Navy. Kennedy is a remarkable sailor, winning many championships with his brother. Kennedy enlists in the Navy and impresses his superiors with his capabilities. Kennedy eventually becomes the skipper of a PT boat, small boats that can sink almost any warship with their four torpedoes. Kennedy and his crew are sent to the Solomon Islands to fight the Japanese. In a battle, Kennedy's boat gets plowed in half by a destroyer, killing two and wounding many of Kennedy's crew. The crew survives for many days without being spotted by enemy units. They are eventually found by two islanders by accident. When Kennedy gets rescued he decided to stay in the Navy a while longer. When he came home he ran for congress, which led to his presidency. Kennedy's life was ended in a parade in Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald.
Opinions:
This was an enjoyable read. I am not particularly interested in Kennedy's life, but this book describes his time in the Navy well enough to even get me interested. This book had additional footnotes and the like that really helped give context to many parts of the book, as I am not very knowledgable in the Navy or its history. I definitely learned a lot about Kennedy's life from this book. This gave much more context to the tragedy of his assassination than I had before. It's extra chapter about everything after his death linked his life to modern day very well. This was one of my favorite non-fiction books that I've read in a while. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in the lives of U.S. presidents or just American history in general. (
