Yet another great book in the Michael Bennett series. He is a NYPD detective, who is widowed and lives with his 10 adopted children, his Irish nanny/girlfriend, Mary Catherine, and his grandfather, Seamus. When this book starts, Mike and his partner are in a building looking for a drug dealer when they are ambushed. As a result of this ambush, Mike discovers that there is a drug war between Mexican and Canadian dealers and he's caught in the middle and realizes that he's a potential target. ( )

One of the best in the series. Good character development and action. ( )

It was ok. Nothing special. Decent story so it was readable. Writing marginal. Characters so so. Since this is a series the primary character, Michael Bennett, is well developed but everyone else is sort of card board. The new characters they bring in are just a name/job to fill a necessary slot in the story, even when they are important to the story. Sometimes I believe James Patterson is loosing his zip. Stories are readable, characters so what and writing is mostly adequate. He use to be much better.

The one things about this book there is a complete story and a bonus novella and this seems to be coming a thing is some of Pattersons books. Takes me back to my childhood; couldnt wait to get my allowance and run down to the drug store rummage through the paper back rack to find the latest ACE Science Fiction double book. This was the heyday of the pulp science fiction writers and oh how I loved it. The reason for this comment is that in the reviews of this book noted a couple of reviews that really dissed the book for this reason. Like the old paper back SciFi books always enjoyed getting a bonus of an additional so so story for the price of one.

Being very candid, I miss the James Patterson I started following years ago. He was never a deep writer but he was a really good story teller. Many of his stories did have a sense of adventure in the and some pizzazz. Any more, for the most part, his writing is ok and once and a while the old James Patterson pops up and makes it worthwhile and gives us a good piece of mindless mind candy. ( )
