"Following her record-breaking run in science fiction, Ann Leckie, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and Locus Awards, brings her immense talent to an epic fantasy novel about the hidden forces that guide our fates. Having helped win a war at great cost in human lives and to its own power, the god known as the Raven of Iraden was forced to continue to fulfill its commitment to its followers and slowly regain its strength through the steady flow of prayers and sacrifices which are the source of all the gods' powers. Centuries into that toil, a usurper to the throne of Iraden has discovered the Raven's weakened state and sets in motion a plot to gain the favor of younger, stronger gods in a bid to consolidate his power. But the Raven of Iraden is more resilient than its enemies have accounted for, and with the help of some unlikely allies it may still return to glory" --… (mais)

***Update on Monday 24 december 2018***

I have zero memory of adding this book to my TBR based on the blurb. It does sounds interesting though. But the second time around social media sucked me into wanting to read this.

Wow it's been a long time that a blurb made me want to read a book!

It’s 1:14 AM since I couldn’t go to sleep until I’d finished, so full review to come. In the meantime: !!!

Edit: Four months later I just realized I never updated, so here's a slightly longer review:

First, I went into this book a little nervous. I really love all of Ann Leckie's science fiction writing, and wasn't sure how she would translate to fantasy. Reading the blurb and first few paragraphs and realizing the book is written in the second person made me more anxious still. In retrospect, I shouldn't have worried. This isn't Ann Leckie trying to wedge herself into the ill-fitting shape of popular fantasy, this is Ann Leckie reworking the fantasy genre in a way only she could.

The whole system of the world is fantastically unique and well thought out, reminiscent of the political and technological world of the Imperial Radch series while still being completely its own thing. The Hamlet influences aren't overbearing, and help to lend a strain of familiarity to a very alien world. The second-person takes a little bit to get used to, but once you settle in you can't imagine the story written in any other way. The Strength and Patience of the Hill was a superb narrator, and Eolo an engaging deuteragonist.

Once again Leckie really knows how to bring momentum and excitement to a scene. As the past and present storylines grew towards each other, and the mysteries of the world and the personal and political intrigue started unspooling, I was unable to put the book down, until the spectacular end of the book made my heart race and left me punching the air.

Obviously, this book won't be for everyone. If you prefer something more grounded in the real world, or more like classic fantasy, you might be overwhelmed or put off by this book. But if you liked Ancillary Justice, or crave a new direction in fantasy, I bet you'll love it as much as I did.

P.S. Anyone know where I can get my hands on one of those Strength and Patience of the Hill bookmarks? I'm very serious about this.

P.P.S. Just read a bunch of other Goodreads reviews and I'm honestly shocked how many of them refer to the Strength and Patience of the Hill as "he". Wild. ( )

I don't typically read the last page of a book with shivers, but Anne Leckie managed it here. Well done.

At the start I thought the tense choice was a gimmick. I'm glad I waited long enough to figure out why it was being used and what it meant. This is a fantastic read. ( )

Not at all like the Ancillary books, but even in the genre of Fantasy, Leckie creates a world.unlike any other, and tells a gripping story of gods and their power. ( )

Hm. I'm still chewing on this one. I have some disagreements with the whole thing but can't discuss without all the spoilers in the world. I enjoyed the long attention span of our narrator and was very intrigued by the description of their peers. But I didn't like some other things about our narrator. Or at least how they were portrayed. I choose to believe that they are less petty than the author has told us. ( )
