"Meet Tomi Adeyemi--the new J.K. Rowling. (Yep, she's that good)."--Entertainment Weekly After battling the impossible, Zélie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orïsha. But the ritual was more powerful than they could've imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji, but of nobles with magic ancestry, too. Now, Zélie struggles to unite the maji in an Orïsha where the enemy is just as powerful as they are. But when the monarchy and military unite to keep control of Orïsha, Zélie must fight to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath. With civil war looming on the horizon, Zélie finds herself at a breaking point: she must discover a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orïsha tears itself apart. I really enjoyed reading this after reading Children of Blood and Bone. I definitely thought this was a good follow up, and it was full of action and very intense. The only issue I had with this was all of the romantic drama. It fit well within the story, but I felt like it could have been toned down just a tad and still have made for a good story. I really liked how all of the characters grew - especially Amari - and it was really interesting to see all the new dynamics within the world Adeyemi created. ( )

Here's the good news: Magic has been returned to Orïsha. Here's the bad news: this sequel is not as good as the first book. Here is why:

1. This book is overly political. The magic and mythology takes a back seat. This is precisely what made the first book special.
2. Characters are inconsistent. Both from the first book, and even in the course of this book. Especially Amari and Inan.
3. The romance seemed forced. Who exactly does Zelie love anyway?
4. Whose POV is this?. Inconsistency of characters and a weak plot kept forcing me to look back at chapter headers to see who was narrating. That's annoying.

diverse teen fiction (power struggles and magic) - audiobook review
stopped at chapter 4. It's been too long since the first one (I maybe remember the village being captured and treated cruelly, and then somehow they fought back and escaped?) but so far I'm not crazy about the new pseudo-romance between Zelie and her suitors, and I'm no longer invested enough to really follow the plot.
I also found the reader's accent distracting. Maybe because she was trying to differentiate between Zelie's and Amari's voices, or maybe because the story was set in a fictional setting that was not a real place in Africa, the accent felt exaggerated (I am definitely not in *any* position to judge authenticity, but that is how it felt to me, and it was distracting). I usually enjoy stories narrated by people with foreign accents and was really looking forward to this audio version for that reason, but not this time. Oh well. I am sure there are readers who will devour this sequel and hopefully continue with the third book as well, but I am moving on to other things. ( )

I read it all in a day, but would have just put the book down if I weren't already invested in the story and characters in the first book. Same beautiful world building, and same powerful characters, but I felt emotionally pushed and pulled so many times, and for what? I still don't know. This story made me think a lot of Harry Potter 5: All the characters were showing their worst sides and there was just so much violence and destruction. Perhaps a good portrayal of PTSD, but hard to witness so many bad choices. I don't know if I've ever felt so frustrated at a book by the time I finished it. I still can't wait for book #3, but it's all because of book #1. Book #2 was an act of devotion on my part. ( )
