In the picture book "The Girl with a Mind for Math: The Story of Raye Montague" we meet a girl named Raye Montague who has began to set her sights on becoming an engineer. As she moves on during that she begans to realize that racial inequality and sexism would challenge that dream every step of the way. Throughout all the hardship, the gifted mathematician persisted in her. After giving this book to the class, they can begin to take in some history aspects along with learning math throughout the book, which can help shape the mind in both subjects. ( )

This book shares the story of a young girl, Raye, who has dreamed of being an engineer after seeing submarines. Despite the many struggles and pushbacks she faced, she pushed through and chased after her dreams. This would be a great book for those who are interested in STEM and those who may feel discouraged about their dreams because of others' opinions. This book would be a great book for kindergarten to early elementary students. It also surrounds the themes of racial inequality, sexism, and perserverence. ( )

Primary; Intermediate; Historical; Informative; Biography; This is a beautiful book about a young black girl who sees a Navy Ship and decides to be an engineer. All through college she is denied an education in engineering because of her color so she gets a degree in business and a job in DC typing for a submarine engineering company. Over time she learns all about engineering and has opportunities to show her boss what she knows. Eventually through hard work and determination she gets a job as an engineer. This is a great read out loud book or book for any child to read about hard work and determination! ( )

This book would be great to use to help inspire students to pursue their dreams of doing a STEM course. It can be used in a free day of the week dedicated to having a reading day. I also enjoyed that the book has some history about women in it. ( )

Primary-Int. Covers the story of the hidden figure, Raye Montague, and all her work as an engineer in the Navy. She was met with many people telling her she couldn't do things because she was a Black woman, but she proved them all wrong. Excellent story for history and also math and science lovers.
