Alicia Berenson's life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London's most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word. Alicia's refusal to talk or give any kind of explanation turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the spotlight of the tabloids at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London. Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His search for the truth leads him down a terrifying path and threatens to consume him.… (mais)

I read this story on audiobook. This book held my attention throughout. It was a great story and both written and told wonderfully. As for the ending. My mind is blown. I can honestly say I didn't see it coming. It played havoc on my emotions. I felt I came to know the characters and some I loved and some I hated. Strongly. Great book and having listened to it on audio I found myself coming up with reasons to listen to it. I found the ending to be shocking and it wrapped up everything but I can certainly say I'm not super happy with how the story ended. Its the only reason I can't give this story 5 stars. ( )

Interesting story with an unanticipated (to me) ending. ( )

I read a lot of thrillers and mysteries. One thing I really don't obsess on is trying to absolutely figure out the mystery or twist before it is revealed. I love to have it all happen for me as I read. But it was impossible for me not to figure this one out around halfway through the book as it was just obvious to me what the twist was going to be, and for the last half of the book I was just annoyed by the spate of red herrings (nope, not going to fall for that one) and misdirection. I had heard a lot of good things about this book and it certainly sounded like my kind of book but it simply did not work for me. Add in to that major flaw the fact that I found our main character infuriating and it was not a great read for me. There were times I was actually this close to yelling at the book as I read it. Unreliable and unlikeable narrators are such a thing now and I am happy that this time it was a man in that role, but the execution here left something to be desired for me. Given the overall reviews for this book you should probably not go by my rating. Let's face it, books are very subjective. But if you ask me then this is just not a great book. ( )

More like 3.5 stars. It was really great for the first half and then it bent over backwards to make sure you were still trying to figure out who done it until near the end. I think this is probably my fault. I prefer the psychological thriller in movie form than in longer drawn out book form. ( )

Definitely a very fast-paced and captivating story. Although I more or less started to wonder about the narrator’s role in the central story about 1/3 into the book, the twist was still rather surprising and well done. ( )

Meet the hottest-tipped debut novelists of 2019

The Silent Patient is narrated by Theo Faber, a psychotherapist determined to discover why Alicia Berenson, a famous artist accused of murdering her husband, has refused to speak since her husband’s death. The therapeutic setting was inspired by Michaelides’s own experience. “Therapy is very important to me and has been a major part of my life,” he says.

Running through the novel is the Greek myth of Alcestis, and Euripides’s play of the same name. The Alcestis theme is perhaps one of the reasons that The Silent Patient is finding such traction both among early readers and the tranche of movie executives who fought to option it. With its story of female sacrifice and the silencing of a woman post-trauma, it feels highly relevant in a post #MeToo world. “It’s about silence as a weapon,” Michaelides says. “And it was very clear in my head when I was writing the book that Alicia was surrounded by these men who were imprisoning her. Like Alcestis, Alicia is trapped and she’s denied a voice. It’s a lifetime of being made to think that she wasn’t worthy, she wasn’t good enough, and maybe that’s something that a lot of women [readers] have been responding to.”

The novel has already been optioned by Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, with Michaelides due to write the screenplay, a fitting circularity for a novelist who has spent the past 15 years working as a screenwriter.

It's odd how quickly one adapts to the strange new world of a psychiatric unit. You become increasingly comfortable with madness—and not just the madness of others, but your own. We're all crazy, I believe, just in different ways.
"Choosing a lover is a lot like choosing a therapist. We need to ask ourselves, is this someone who will be honest with me, listen to criticism, admit making mistakes, and not promise the impossible?"
