"Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go-Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it's the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she's twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Another band getting noticed is The Six, led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she's pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend. The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice"--… (mais)

Review for "Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): I want to start by saying that all of the reviews raving about how incredible this book is are incredibly true! I decided not to buy any more books because I work at a library, but this is a book I need to get a copy of for my personal library. I am a huge fan of music, bands from the '70s, rock n' roll, documentaries, history and interviews. This book has all of that and more! The reader falls in love with each of the characters and is taken on such a journey through their highs and lows. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I am looking forward to reading more of Taylor Jenkins Reid's books! ( )

This book is a great road trip audio book especially if you enjoy classic rock and learning more about those bands that you grew up loving. The cast they chose to read this book did a wonderful job. ( )

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would considering I've never really been into media that deals with music. I'm not a big music person. I recognize fully that my music taste when I do listen isn't great by other people's standards but I mostly listen to podcasts or audiobooks anyways.

I did listen to this as an audiobook and I am 95% sure that if I had read this one physically, I would have given it a lower rating. Even though I like reading books that are written in an alternate format, I don't love reading books that are written entirely in an interview format with no other alternate media mixed in (with World War Z being a major exception) but one thing I truly hate in books is reading song lyrics. I never actually read them, I always end up skipping over them. I know I would have done that with this one if I had been reading them on the page which would have been a huge problem because they are the center of the story in so many ways.

I went into this hearing quite a bit about it and from what I heard, I expected this book to be a lot like the movie Almost Famous and it basically was in many ways. I know a lot of people like that movie and I liked it fine, but again, I just don't love musician stories. I do think the plot of this one was something I could enjoy even though I don't like these types of stories. I appreciated how Jenkins Reid interwove the feminism of both that time and our time without it becoming anachronistic or ineffective. I find feminist plot lines in books to be actually much more effective when the ideas are inherent in the lives of the characters rather than just having some sort of monologue where it feels like the reader is being preached at. I think the complexity of all the characters was really what I loved about this book. I was never really on anyone's side but I felt like I understood everyone and why they felt the way they did. Because I didn't care much about the plot, I really latched on to the characters but I think this was already in many ways a story driven by the characters and that's why it was told in an interview style through their own voices.

As I said, I really enjoyed the audiobook but I do feel it could have been pushed further in some ways. I feel like we're seeing a real rise of very original audiobooks and much more often we are seeing full cast audiobooks as well as ones that seem more like audio dramas with sound effects and everything. Some books, such as this one, Sadie by Courtney Summers, and The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. What I would have loved to see is the music become more a part of the audiobook where some songs could actually be written in collaboration with the author and a performance could be inserted into the audiobook, especially earlier on when it wouldn't interrupt important character moments. I am not super familiar with audiobook production but it does seem like there has been more stuff like that in audiobooks lately and I would have loved to see that here.

I'm glad I enjoyed this book because I wasn't sure I was going to. I had never read a Taylor Jenkins Reid book before so I didn't even know if I would enjoy her writing style. I don't know if I will ever pick up another book by her. Maybe the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo if I can get my hands on an audiobook. She doesn't write a lot of books that really call to me as a reader. But, I am glad I picked this one up and I do understand why a lot of people love this. I will not be watching the T.V. show that is coming out because I don't really watch T.V. but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes very popular. This breed of nostalgia is very popular right now. This book is an attempt to piece together a clear portrait of how the renowned rock band Daisy Jones & The Six rose to fame - as well as what led to their abrupt and infamous split while on tour in Chicago on July 12, 1979.
