In Firestorm, CIA agent Savannah James, who also appeared in the first two books in the series, finally gets her story as she is assigned a covert mission to infiltrate a society party in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at which several shady businessmen will be in attendance. Savannah's job is to download information from the current government minister, Jean Paul Lubanga's computer to incriminate him in a plot to overthrow the current leadership in the DRC. Savannah immediately recruits Green Beret Cassius Callahan as her partner on this job since his mother is from the DRC and he is fluent in the local language. It doesn't hurt that she has been attracted to him ever since they first met. Cal resists taking the job, especially since he is also attracted to Savannah and doesn't want to be, but when he finds out that Savannah's boss plans to pair her with a former partner who had raped her, he believes he has no choice.
Firestorm includes many realistic details about the history and current situation in Congo, adding depth and realism to the story. In the two previous books in the series, Savannah's persona has been considered cold and unfeeling, but as her background unfolds in this book, the reasons behind her demeanor are revealed, making her a very sympathetic character. Even though the middle of the book is a little slow, the political intrigue, action, and romance eventually move the story along. Overall, this is a good book with a couple of twists, making it a satisfying ending to the series and well worth the read. ( )

REVIEW: “This was romance and adventure, in all its tarnished, dirty glory.” Well researched and filled with gritty scenarios, this is an intriguing suspense. The words come alive with harrowing escapes and steamy romance. Savvy’s intense focus includes her choice of Special Ops, Cal for a two-person CIA mission into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Betrayals abound in a political powder keg driven by greed and power. And through it all, the author has skillfully woven the plight of the real men, women and children of that area. This is a standalone book but read the other books in this series just because they are great books also. This is my voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

DESCRIPTION, NOT REVIEW: CIA covert operator Savannah James is after intel on a potential coup in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but she needs a partner fluent in Lingala to infiltrate the organization. Sergeant First Class Cassius Callahan is the perfect choice, except he doesn’t like her very much. He doesn’t trust her, either, despite the sparks that flare between them, fierce and hot. Still, he accepts the assignment even though their cover requires Savvy to pose as his mistress.

They enter battle-worn Congo to expose the financing for the coup. A trail of cobalt, gold, and diamonds leads them into the heart of a jungle in which everyone is desperate to find the mother lode of ore and gems. Betrayal stalks them as they follow the money, but Savvy will stop at nothing to bring down the would-be dictator before he can ignite a firestorm that will engulf all of Africa.

Deep in the sultry rainforest, spy and Green Beret forge a relationship more precious than diamonds, but Cal knows Savvy is willing to sacrifice anything—or anyone—to complete her mission. As they near the flashpoint, Cal will have to save her from the greatest threat of all: herself. ( )

Firestorm by Rachel Grant is the third book in her Flashpoint series and it is a fabulous way to wrap up this series although I think there is room for more books. Rachel brings us back to Camp Citron in Djibouti and this time the story is about Sergeant First Class Cassius Callahan and our favorite CIA agent, Savannah James. I was so glad to find out that we would get to experience their story. For those of you who haven’t read the first two books, Tinderbox and Catalyst, you will not be lost if you start here, but I highly recommend reading the first two books in order, so that you experience the richness of the story by understanding all of the characters, their stories and the location that it takes place in.

We begin with Savannah, “Savvy”, meeting with Sergeant Callahan, “Cal”, and explaining to him why he is the perfect person to aid her on a covert CIA mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with her as his “mistress”. With his fluency with the language to aid her in the mission to infiltrate a criminal organization, Savvy must work hard to convince Cal that he should work with her. But Savvy is not Cal’s favorite person, and it is an uphill battle to get him on board with the Black Op. He doesn’t trust her but there is a spark between them that they have both been trying to ignore and this just might be the one thing they need to find out if there is truly a chance for them.

There is the mounting evidence of corruption in the mission, but who is the bad guy and who is telling the truth. There is the possibility Cal and Savvy aren’t telling the truth about who they are and what the mission is really about, but if you want to know the answer to that, you will have to read the book.

I couldn’t put this book down. I HAD to know what was real and what was for the Op, but if you are like me and enjoy Military Romantic Suspense, then this is the book for you. It has it all and in exciting situations and with a powerful ending. I hope there is going to be more books after this but I think it was originally planned as a trilogy. Hopefully Rachel starts a new series with more of the guys from this unit. ( )
