Title: Betrayal of the Mountain Man (Mountain Man #34)
Author: William W Johnstone
Pages: 289
Year: 2014
Publisher: Pinnacle
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Smoke and Sally Jensen worked hard together to build the ranch they named Sugarloaf. With a bank note due soon, they might no longer have their home. Working alongside their ranch hands, they lived through a difficult winter. Their cattle and that of their neighbors died. With only a few cattle left to sell to pay the bank note, it is a very precarious situation. Sally believes she has found a way to help them pay the note and keep the Sugarloaf, but Smoke is not comfortable with her solution.
In another town, a group of men come together to rob a bank. On their way out of town, who should they happen to meet but Smoke Jensen on his way to secure funding for their ranch. One minute Smoke remembers taking care of his horse’s front shoe and the next he is surrounded and carted off to jail. He is accused of taking part in the robbery and the murder of the bank president. Now, the town is out for revenge and Smoke is stuck behind bars and facing the gallows.
In another intoxicating and astonishing story readers will not want to miss, Smoke Jensen will face unprecedented challenges! The novel is a mixture of suspense, romance, and raw western action that was fun to read from start to finish. What draws attention to the series for me is the way Smoke and Sally stand together and love each other deeply. In the story, it was encouraging to see Sally come to the defense of her man, and the way she faced trouble head on!
I highly recommend others read not just this installment but the other stories in the series. Visit the author’s website at https://williamjohnstonebooks.com
