Instead, I found an intense, suspenseful story that grabbed my heart in an iron fist, milking it of tears and leaving me both broken hearted and elated. Totally more than I bargained for - I can't wait to read more by magician/author Mindy McGinnis!!! ( ![]() Herione is a compelling story of one young girl's decent into addiction. I like that this realistically shows how quickly drug abuse escalates into a full blown addiction and how choices that may seem insane to those on the outside may seem completely logical to the addict. It also highlights how families miss all the clues mostly because they don't want to see their loved one in that way. The story feels authentic and important. I highly recommend it. 2020 Popsugar Challenge - Book with a great first line "When I wake up, all my friends are dead." Herione is a compelling story of one young girl's decent into addiction. Once again Mindy McGinnis "hits it out of the park," to use a cliche close to the subject of this book about a softball star whose car accident leads her down the slippery slope to opioid addiction. Honest, real, and emotionally raw, the story of Mickey Catalan's struggle--to overcome her injury in time for softball season, leading her to abuse OxyContin painkillers and become so in need that she will try heroin--is a story that has become all too common in our country lately. McGinnis writes Mickey as a multifaceted character: an athlete who longs to get back to the strong superior body she had before, and can't fathom not having winning form, a daughter who sees the flaws in her parents and needs them to really see her, not just their own lives, and a friend who is drifting apart from her partner on the field just as they really need each other. A heartbreaking book that will resonate with many teens. Some language; for older teens. Heroine is a novel about addiction and the fact that the main character Mickey is a high schooler brought another layer of empathy for a young person pulled into such a life. Mickey and her best friend are in an accident and seriously injured. They are star players on their softball team and colleges are already scouting. Mickey is in extreme pain as her leg was essentially removed from it socket. The author compares it to tearing the leg off a Barbie doll. Mickey becomes reliant on Oxy and then heroine. This is a view into an addict’s life and the need for family intervention. A novel that brings awareness and anger about the opioid crisis. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
An Amazon Best Book of the Month! A captivating and powerful exploration of the opioid crisis--the deadliest drug epidemic in American history--through the eyes of a college-bound softball star. Edgar Award-winning author Mindy McGinnis delivers a visceral and necessary novel about addiction, family, friendship, and hope. When a car crash sidelines Mickey just before softball season, she has to find a way to hold on to her spot as the catcher for a team expected to make a historic tournament run. Behind the plate is the only place she's ever felt comfortable, and the painkillers she's been prescribed can help her get there. The pills do more than take away pain; they make her feel good. With a new circle of friends--fellow injured athletes, others with just time to kill--Mickey finds peaceful acceptance, and people with whom words come easily, even if it is just the pills loosening her tongue. But as the pressure to be Mickey Catalan heightens, her need increases, and it becomes less about pain and more about want, something that could send her spiraling out of control.
