"A brilliant debut, full of everything I love: a sparkling and fully realized heroine, an intricate and deadly system of magic, and a searing romance that kept me reading long into the night. Serpent & Dove is an absolute gem of a book." --Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Court of Thorns and Roses series Bound as one, to love, honor, or burn. Book one of a stunning fantasy duology, this tale of witchcraft and forbidden love is perfect for fans of Kendare Blake and Sara Holland. Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation--marriage. Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all. Set in a world of powerful women, dark magic, and off-the-charts romance, book one of this stunning fantasy duology will leave readers burning for more.… (mais)

"If she was destined to burn in Hell, I would burn with her."

Came for the enemies-to-lovers and forced marriage tropes. Stayed for the witchcraft, conflict and plot-twists. ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

Loved it. It started out real slow for me, and I wasn't sure I was going to read it, but I told myself to get 25% of the way through it and decide then. I was hooked before I reached that point. This book is definitely a romance, but a great one. The set up that the book left should make for an interesting story going into the next book. ( )

Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took residence in the one town she thought she'd be safe, Cesarine. Hiding in plain sight, Louise gave up her magic and became a street thief. But the atrocities of the Church will never let her forget she is a witch. The Chasseurs hunt any who would dare show magic in the city, and she is reminded time and again why she must never use her power. But when a public incident involving Louise and Chasseur Reid Diggory threatens to bring embarrassment to the Church, they will find their fates woven together. Bound by marriage, witch and Chasseur must find a balance, and Louise will have to be ever so careful.

Serpent & Dove is one of those books I picked up and put down time and time again at the bookstore. The cover lured me in, the premises sounded interesting, but I was worried it would fall into the repetitive young adult tropes. Then I received it as a secret Santa gift and decided to give it a try. And I am glad I did.

Do not expect a magic heavy story. If anything the magic accents the storyline instead of being the main focus. Yes, Louise is a witch, but using magic in Cesarine is a death sentence. In this world, magic evokes a smell that is impossible to miss. However, Louise is not defenseless without her magic. She has a sharp wit and survival instincts that save her in some of the most precarious situations.

Reid is set in his ways, as can be expected, and watching Louise unnerve him time again with her behavior is hilarious. While he tries to be in a constant state of control and seriousness, Louise breaks out into bawdy tavern songs and embarrasses him for the fun of it. With the two being complete opposites, it makes their story all the more entertaining. And Shelby Mahurin has a knack for putting her characters in compromising situations, ramping up the tension, and switching points of view in the next chapter, leaving you to wonder what happens next.

The romance in Serpent & Dove takes an extremely long time to develop, as it should. Most of the tension and conflict built into the story does not surround the relationship, but the outside forces opposing Louise. And by the time the plot starts to edge the two towards one another, there is enough history between them to make it work. I loved every moment of it, and I am not the type to root for romance in a novel.

Serpent & Dove is a well crafted story of enemies to lovers. There is a little bit of everything mixed into the storyline, daring heists, action, friendship, sisterhood, proof that love can be a powerful magic all it's own and so much more. ( )

3.5 stars (rounded)

Needs a lot more character and backstory development, but not bad. There was just a sense of never quite knowing what kind of world you’re reading about - no richness. And yet so much opportunity for it. ( )

Serpent and Dove was a wonderful book to read! I enjoyed the characters and story line. I did not know this was the author’s debut novel. I give her kudos and am looking forward to book number 2.

Lou was a character I enjoyed. She hides behind her armor of sarcasm, humor, and profanity. She wants everyone who she does not trust to feel miserable or agitated around her. Lou is a rounded character once you understand her. She only trusts a small group of people do to her being a witch and not only a witch, but someone important for her coven. In this novel, keeping her nature a secret is a life or death situation. I understand where some readers have an issue. Her wishy-washy choices contradict her character. I feel this was intentional because Lou herself does not know what she wants on a personal level. She knows she needs to hide from the Chasseurs and her coven or her mother. Her coven raised her for a reason and purpose, and she does not know how to look forward.

Reid was an okay character. He was your typical brain washed character. What I like about him was, he was an honest and loyal character. He was loyal to the Chasseurs and the Archbishop and honest to Lou on how he felt about her. He was honest about his way of life all until the Archbishop forced Reid to marry Lou. He may not have wanted to be with Lou, but he took her as his responsibility for keeping her safe from others. His perspective on the world was black and white where Lou’s was gray. I believe he could have been more developed, but I think his character will flush out more in the next book. At the end of the novel, he was shaken up with what happened, and he will continue to be tested.

Coco and Ansel are great side characters. They keep the main characters Lou and Reid on their toes and question their decisions. Coco tells Lou how it is and gets away with it. They have been friends since childhood and both care for each other like sisters. They both would do anything for one another, and this shows in the story. Poor Ansel haha, he is easy to manipulate, especially around Lou, but I think it is Lou and Coco who shows him the world is more than black and white like the Chasseurs believe. I want more of these characters and will look forward to more development in the next book.

The world building is not that heavy in this book, but it has a French medieval feel towards it. The fight between the witches and the church, the Chasseurs, who are like warrior monks, but not like the knights templar, is very heavy and driven in this book. What I loved was the way the Author had explained the different covens, (two that we know of), and how their magic works and differs from one another. The magic is unique from each witch.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy the enemy's love story or the story of witches vs the church. This was a great read and am looking forward to the next book. ( )
