I really wanted to love this book because I adore the author and the premise sounded so good but for some reason it just didn't quite work for me. ( )

I came into WHERE DREAMS DESCEND which practically no expectations and... I loved it. I really did. This book is magical and mysterious and just the right amount of spooky. The secrets of the city are woven so well into the story that I felt like I was peeling aside the layers at just the right pace to add suspense. I absolutely want to know more. I want to know what is happening here and I can't because, alas, book two is not yet published.

The characters themselves varies between flat and just okay, I think. I liked Aaros and Canary best, both of whom are secondary characters, but a preferences for side characters over the heroes is not uncommon for me. I liked the magic, but I want to know a bit more about how it works. Angeles did an amazing job of drawing me into the story and getting me interested. I will want some answers in book two, but for now, I'm just utterly enjoying the sensation of it.

Though I forgot to post a review on the publishing date, I did not forget about the content of this book. It has a beautiful cover that I'd love to have on my bookshelf, and inside the cover is an equally beautiful and well written story about a girl getting out of her cage after years and years of oppression. Though, it's not the usual kind that you would think of.

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Kingdom of Cards duology. I got a copy of this book in my Owlcrate subscription box.

Story (4/5): Kallia is a powerful magician that has been raised in seclusion by Jack. Kallia desperately wants to participate in a contest in Glorian but Jack forbids it. Kallia manages to escape Jack’s memory altering magic and joins the contest on her own. However, the magicians here in Glorian don’t like female magicians and aren’t prepared for Kallia’s amazing displays. When magicians start disappearing though, Kallia begins to wonder if Jack was right and something dark has been awoken in Glorian. It was a well done story that was unique and engaging.

Characters (4/5): For the most part I loved the characters. Kallia is fiery and daring, Jack is mysterious and complex, Demarco is earnest and secretive. However, at times the characters also came across as really selfish and immature.

Setting (5/5): I love the setting of Glorian, it is dark and amazingly mysterious. The description here is amazing and the setting really comes alive for the reader. It was creative and wonderfully done.

Writing Style (4/5): There are a lot of really beautiful descriptions in here. The whole story is glittering and sparkly but has a bit of a dark, tarnished feel to it as well. Some parts are a bit slow and I was kind of upset that it ended on a complete cliffhanger. I also felt that it lacked depth at points, however, I did still enjoy the dark circus-like feel to the story and am curious to see what happens in the second book.

My Summary (4/5): Overall this was magical and well-written, the description in here is beautiful. I loved the dark and magical circus-like setting and loved the strong and mysterious characters. I do feel like the characters were very selfish and immature at times and also felt like the story lacked depth and was a bit slow at points. However, I plan on continuing the series because I was completely drawn in by the magic and mystery here. I would recommend it to those who like books about dark magic and enjoy a circus-like spectacle. ( )

I’ve been looking forward to this book for so long, and it didn’t disappoint.

First of all, this book is gorgeous. From the cover to the prose to the magical world, the extravagance of the book takes over.

This book was described as a modern Phantom of the Opera, and I got major Phantom of the Opera vibes in places, especially when Jack - the magician who would be the Phantom in this retelling - keeps appearing in mirrors. But the book is so much more than just a retelling. The magic system is spectacular, and the mysterious ruined city divided into four Houses represented by suites of cards hints at so much more backstory that I hope the author will explore in the second book.

When Kallia learns that her employer and closest friend - the master magician known as Jack and the owner of Hellfire House, the club where she works - has been lying to her and messing with her mind, she escapes.

She’s grown up in isolated Hellfire House and knows nothing of the outside world, except that the nearest city, the ruined Glorian, is opening its doors for a competition for magicians. And thanks to Jack’s training, Kallia’s a magician who can compete with the best.

But everyone has secrets - Jack, Kallia, her new mysterious and sexy mentor, even the city itself. And someone seems willing to bring down the competition at any cost, making the body count rise.

Kallia is independent and headstrong, but finds herself drawn to the mysterious Demarcos, who’s there to judge the competition. There’s sexual tension between them almost immediately, so of course he’s picked to be her mentor. But Jack, who can conjure a version of himself through mirrors, keeps showing up and ruining the moment.

This book ends on a major cliffhanger, which I didn’t mind because of the reveals along the way. I’ve fallen in love with this world and these characters. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. ( )
