"A twisty, compelling new novel about one woman's complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death... From the moment Lucy met her husband's mother, Diana, she was kept at arm's length. Diana was exquisitely polite, and properly friendly, but Lucy knew that she was not what Diana envisioned. But who could fault Diana? She was a pillar of the community, an advocate for social justice who helped female refugees assimilate to their new country. Diana was happily married to Tom, and lived in wedded bliss for decades. Lucy wanted so much to please her new mother-in-law. That was five years ago. Now, Diana has been found dead, a suicide note near her body. Diana claims that she no longer wanted to live because of a battle with cancer. But the autopsy finds no cancer. The autopsy does find traces of poison and suffocation. Who could possibly want Diana dead? Why was her will changed at the eleventh hour to disinherit both of her adult children and their spouses? With Lucy's secrets getting deeper and her relationship with her mother-in-law growing more complex as the pages turn, this new novel from Sally Hepworth is sure to add to her growing legion of fans. Praise for Sally Hepworth: "With jaw-dropping discoveries, and realistic consequences, this novel is not to be missed. Perfect for lovers of Big Little Lies." --Library Journal, starred review "Hepworth deftly keeps the reader turning pages and looking for clues, all the while building multilayered characters and carefully doling out bits of their motivations" --… (mais)

I found this a pleasant diversion. Hepworth captures the dynamics of family relationships well. ( )

I have read several of Sally Hepworth's novels, and this one did not disappoint. It is told in both the present and the past. Lucy and Ollie are married with children, and his mother, Diana, is the mother-in-law. It seems that Lucy and Diana have a very fraught relationship. Ollie's sister, Nettie and her husband, Patrick, have been trying for a child, but having issues. Diana works with pregnant moms. When Diana is found dead, apparently by suicide, Ollie is crushed. As the family is under scrutiny regarding Diana's death, the past is told to the reader, so we get an insight into Diana, her hopes for her family, and her relationship with her children and in-laws.
As it comes to light that everyone in the family is hiding a secret, you wonder, was Diana's death suicide or not? It may surprise you to find the truth. ( )

This was an audiobook listen. The narrator, Barrie Kreinik, was good and the story was interesting. If you have ever been involved in an estate dispute this book will hit home.

The Goodwin family is wealthy but family matriarch, Diana, tightly controls the purse strings. Her children, Ollie and Nettie, (of adult age I should point out) have learned to ask their father, Tom, for money but when Ollie introduces his fiancee, Lucy, to the family and their request for a loan to buy a bigger house is turned down by Diana Lucy refuses to take any money from Tom. She sees that Diana's belief that the children need to earn their own money and use it to finance their lifestyle is sound. However, both children and their spouses expect that when Tom and Diana die they will come into a sizable inheritance. When Diana dies soon after Tom and her will provides that the entire estate will go to a charity that helps refugees to Australia they are all shocked. At first it looked like Diana had committed suicide, grief-stricken by Tom's death, but the police are not convinced. They launch an investigation and each one of the adult children and their spouses have a good reason to kill Diana. They also have the opportunity. The book explores Diana's back story which clarifies her strong beliefs but it also opens up the time period around her death by alternating perspectives.

Was I surprised by the ending? Not completely and I have to say I thought the perpetrator's motive seemed rather far-fetched. ( )

Not the usual psychotic women doing psychotic things to each other book. This is more a you don’t really know someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes, and while it it an excellent study in how easily we can feel slighted or offended. Y a casual remark or response, there is not much of a mystery involved with what happened to the mother-in-law. ( )

4.5 stars. I loved that the book was set in Australia- although that setting isn't central to the book. Rich characters. ( )

For my mother-in-law,Anne,
who I would never dream of murdering.

And for my father-in-law, Peter
who, on the odd occasion, I have.

"Tom! Call me Tom." He smiles at me like he's won the Easter raffle, then he appears to remember himself.
"Her name was..." I start at the same time as Diana stands. We all stop talking and follow her with our eyes. For the first time, I understand the term matriarch, and the power of being one.
"What do you think of Diana?"
"Patrick," Nettie warns.
"What?" A smile curls at the corners of his mouth. "It isn't a trick question."
Meeting the family, I realize, requires you to be a politician. You need to know where to throw your support at what time to yield maximum results.
Patrick laughs a little too heartily. Nettie looks daggers at him.
