Spiritual book telling an unfortunate truth for indigenous women and girls. In the past indigenous people were taken from their families and forced in to a christian and eurocentric culture, Now with the violence, assault, and kidnapping rates being incredibly high many girls are missing...stolen. Unable to keep families together or in better conditions. This is one story of many. Then there is the bond. The beauty among the culture. For young girls to learn the traditional ways. On their first moon cycle going through the berry fast. Sweat huts, sage, community, activism, and so many other things tying them closer to their identity and protecting them as two spirited people. I deeply enjoyed this as i don't know any indigenous people i support and respect them and hope they get justice and peace.
It ended far too abruptly and I would have liked to see the story more fleshed-out. I've just noticed there's a number 2 so the series will likely remedy these issues but I dislike being given the story piecemeal. ( )
Miikwan and Dez are best friends. Dez is worried because her kokum (grandmother) has diabetes, and after an amputation, social services isn't going to allow Dez to stay with her. Dez runs away rather than be put in a group home, an echo of the residential schools of the (not-so-distant) past. Throughout, protective spirits drawn in blue hover near the girls, while malevolent forces in black or gray represent danger lurking.
