The orphan Tom Sawyer, raised by his aunt, is never out of trouble for long. A mischievous, charming boy (not to mention genius at escaping from trouble), Tom's adventures involve many unwitting bystanders. From one moment to the next, the boy could change into a pirate, or ship's captain - when he's not trying to win Becky Thatcher for a sweetheart, of course. Tom is also a friend of Twain's other beloved boy-hero, Huckleberry Finn.
I love the book because it is a classic, and accurately portrays life during that time, but I still struggle with the language in the book, even though I know times were different then. That being said, the core values of working hard and obeying authority are values I would love see return to America. It is a great read as a student or as someone who wants to understand more about country life and the past. ( )
Grover Gardner was wonderful in his narration of this classic. My biggest complaint is that the audiobook "chapters" had no bearing on the chapters of the text (maybe they were the cassette sides of the original recording??) ( )
At times, there are works designated as classic that fail over time to live up to that moniker. This book deservedly retains its designation as classic after all of these years. Twain's genius is to depict and describe the dealings of children and adults in much the same language, as the actions of both (sadly) often have more in common than not. Recommended for lovers of classic fiction and/or 19th-century Americana. ( )

Preface Although my book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls, I hope it will not be shunned by men and women on that account, for part of my plan has been to try pleasantly to remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in.
"TOM!" No answer. "TOM!" No answer. "What's gone with that boy, I wonder? You TOM!" No answer.

He had discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it—namely, that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain.

Most of the characters that perform in this book still live, and are prosperous and happy. Some day it may seem worth while to take up the story of the younger ones again and see what sort of men and women they turned out to be; therefore it will be wisest not to reveal any of that part of their lives at present.
