"The Gray Man deals in death with mathematical precision, but this time he may finally find himself on the wrong side of the equation in this blistering thriller from New York Times bestselling author Mark Greaney. Court Gentry's flight on a CIA transport plane is interrupted when a security team brings a hooded man aboard. The mysterious passenger is being transported to England where a joint CIA/MI6 team will interrogate him about a mole in Langley. When they land at an isolated airbase in the UK, they are attacked by a hostile force that kidnaps the prisoner. Gentry, the lone survivor, is ordered to track down the assassins and rescue the asset. In Virginia, an assault on a CIA safe house leaves dead and wounded agents littering a suburban neighborhood. The object of the attack is Court's former lover, Zoya Zakharova. She escapes, but with a team of killers on her trail. Now, two different agents on two different continents are battling blind against the impossible--but each may be holding the piece the other needs to fight their way out"--… (mais)

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this series eight books ago, but I gotta say, it's been a hell of a fun ride. Greaney packs in a crap-ton of action, while also knowing exactly when to take his foot off the gas and let his characters show their humanity.

While the plot of this one seemed a little more by-the-numbers, overall it still was a whole lotta fun, with some unexpected laughs here and there, just at the right time.

The Gray Man is great. ( )

Started out an excellent thriller, but was not as good as his previous book. This could be a bit shorter and I'm not sure if I liked the ending. Still a good action thriller. ( )

Audiobook.. Dreadful “British” accents by the narrator. Couldn’t finish it because of this. ( )

Court Gentry, The Gray Man, has been recalled to Washington D.C. and is hitching a ride on a plane transporting a captive to England. When the plane touches down at a remote airport used by the CIA for clandestine activities, the agents accompanying the prisoner are ambushed and the prisoner is kidnapped. Gentry and two other Poison Apple operatives soon find themselves engaged in an effort to prevent a catastrophic event. Unfortunately, they do not know the nature of the event or where it will occur.

The action moves swiftly and for the most part “Mission Critical” is enjoyable. At points the plot feels forced, however, and needlessly padded.

Zoya, the newest Poison Apple operative, is the daughter of the terrorist leader planning the attack. She is convinced that she must be the one to kill her father, so she allows herself to be captured. Three times. That’s as far as her planning goes, so each time creates doubt about her true allegiance and the need for Gentry and Hightower to rescue her. One silly attempt to infiltrate the terrorist organization would have been enough.

Gentry finds himself overmatched by a giant of a man who beats him mercilessly. This also happens three times. Each time Gentry’s escape from death seems contrived. Greater care in plotting and more discipline in editing would have produced a superior story.

Despite these shortcomings, “Mission Critical” provides a fast-paced action thriller that readers of that genre will enjoy. ( )
