Fantasy. Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:A chilling ghost story with a twist: the New York Times bestselling author of The Winter People returns to the woods of Vermont to tell the story of a husband and wife who don't simply move into a haunted house??they build one . . .
In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate have abandoned the comforts of suburbia to take up residence on forty-four acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams. When they discover that this beautiful property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the local legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago. With her passion for artifacts, Helen finds special materials to incorporate into the house??a beam from an old schoolroom, bricks from a mill, a mantel from a farmhouse??objects that draw her deeper into the story of Hattie and her descendants, three generations of Breckenridge women, each of whom died suspiciously. The House Next Door por Anne Rivers Siddons (flying_monkeys)
flying_monkeys: One often thinks of haunted houses as an existing structure corrupted by the actions of its inhabitants. Here's a slightly different take on the traditional haunted house story.

Decent story, but it just seemed really slow. ( )

I wanted this to be scarier and I wanted more Helen and Nate relationship building (particularly at the end) and I wanted less of everything and more concision. ( )

I really enjoyed this. It had a fun twist on the usual haunted house structure and the characters were distinct and vibrant. I also appreciate how well McMahon is able to capture Vermont -- both in its natural beauty and the people who inhabit the small state. It's a difficult task.

I hope to read more of McMahon's work this year; this is only the second book of hers that I've read. I'm very impressed. ( )

Helen and Nate leave their teaching jobs in Connecticut in search of a more rural lifestyle, which they find in small town Vermont where they decide to build their dream home. The land in question is the site of a long-ago hanging of a woman accused of being a witch after she predicted a school would burn, which it did with children dying inside the building. Her name was Hattie, and she figures prominently in their lives, so do the females in Hattie's subsequent generations.

Although I am wary of books with "ghosts" and/or "supernatural" in the description, I read this book at the suggestion of a friend. It is well written with twist and turns that should appeal to fans of this genre. ( )

LOVED IT! McMahon is definitely one of my fave authors and her books never disappoint. I felt this book on so many levels and it made want to dig up some ancient history and go antiquing. ( )

A city couple trades their fast-paced lifestyle for rural Vermont, running headlong into a few ghosts along the way. ... Too much wide-eyed sentimentality; not enough creepy malevolence.

...powerful supernatural thriller from bestseller McMahon .... Whether one believes in ghosts, McMahon’s consummately crafted chiller is guaranteed to haunt.
