A novella that fits in between Grey Sister and Holy Sister.

Essentially, it's just an enjoyable little side escapade for our protagonists as we are all invited to a Sis', young adults, soiree down in Verity after a series of unexplained poisonings.   And we even get the beginnings of some real romance creeping into our story line for Nona: ooh-er!

Yes folks, more of that great action packed shenanigans that we have come to expect from a Sis soiree: all good fun. ( )

I messed up; this short story should be read between Grey Sister and Holy Sister, but I'd already finished the trilogy when I found it. It definitely would fit better in its proper place as it explains a few things that come up in Holy Sister, but I still enjoyed it since it's about assassins and romantic attraction (not that anyone is romantically attracted to the assassin). And kissing.

I wouldn't usually buy a short story but I am enjoying the series - and have got at least one of the novels for £0.99 - so fair's fair.


It's a fairly slight tale, but as well written as I've come to expect with the Book of the Ancestor series, and I will definitely be reading more of Lawrence's work, with both the Impossible Times and Broken Empires trilogies lined up. The sisters are asked to investigate the poisonings of several high-status young woman and a man, and Nona's friend Ara, being herself from such an elevated background and schooled in its ways, is the perfect choice.


There is not a great deal in the way of character development - this is a short story, and the characters are already very well developed from the previous two novels - and at first it feels a little YA for my tastes but it is an intriguing fantasy investigation story, with a brief bit of the action that Lawrence writes so well. ( )

Incredibly contrived plot! I did enjoy it, so it gets three stars, but wow that was so unbelievably contrived - not worthy of the perfection of the rest of the series (this is only a short story). But yes, it was fun, so it's okay. ( )
