How can one kid defeat an entire band of space pirates when everyone he knows is asleep?Twelve-year-old Zero is traveling with 20,000 people for 105 years to colonize a new planet. Everyone is in stasis, so they'll be safe during the trip, but when Zero's pod malfunctions it wakes him early, like 105 years early. At first he's excited to be the only one awake - he has the entire ship to himself, so he can go anywhere and see and do and eat anything he wants - but when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and kidnap the colonizers, Zero has to think fast and find a way to stop them all on his own. This is the middle grade debut by New York Times best-selling author Dan Wells, who has written lots of books for adults, as well as movies, television, and plays. He cohosts the Hugo-winning podcast for aspiring writers called Writing Excuses, also writes short fiction and game fiction, and edited the anthology Altered Perceptions to help raise funds for and awareness of mental illness. Dan lives in northern Utah with his wife, six children, and more than 400 board games.Additional narrators include Jonathan Davis, Polly Lee, Eunice Wong, Chelsea Spack, and Charlie Thurston.… (mais)

I was a bit wary because it said: 'full cast', but all narrators were great, and the story is very entertaining. A lovely book, something you can have your children listen to without supervision. It's fine for adults, too. I enjoyed every minute of it. ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in The Zero Chronicles. I borrowed this audiobook from Audible Plus.

Audiobook Quality (4/5): This is a full performance audiobook which I am normally not a fan of. However, here it was done really well and it fit the tone of the story perfectly.

Story (3/5): This was fine, it is written for younger kids (I think ages 5-10 might enjoy it) but is a bit too silly and simple for adults. I thought it was okay but won't be picking up any other books in the series. If I had a younger kid (rather than a teenager, I might listen to this with them. It's basically a sci-fi story about a young boy saving the day on a spaceship. All of the situations and characters are very over characterized and silly.

Characters (3/5): I enjoyed Zero, he acts pretty much like a kid in his situation would probably act. I thought all of the adult characters were fairly poorly done. They are all overly characterized, untrustworthy and a bit stupid. As I said, younger kids will get a kick out of this but it doesn’t work well for adults.

Setting (3/5): The spaceship setting was well done and interesting. Although I would have liked to learn a bit more about how the spaceship worked and its environment.

Writing Style (3/5): The writing style is fine and aimed at a younger audience. The plot is simple and predictable, the language used throughout is also simple. It’s all fine but wasn’t really something I enjoyed all that much.

My Summary (3/5): Overall the performance of the audiobook was very well done and I think a group of elementary kids would find this hilarious, I just thought it was so-so. This is aimed at a younger audience that enjoys stupid, over-charaterized adults and lots of “potty” humor. It wasn’t something I enjoyed listening to and I won’t be reading future books in the series. ( )

This was a cute story about Zero, who is among 20,000 colonists headed to a new planet. the trip will take 105 years and they will be in stasis for the entirety. Unfortunately for Zero his stasis pod malfunctions, but fortunate for the conists. Because he is awake, he is able to thwart a pirate invasion. One of the pirates is the ship's pilot and he helps his cohorts to gain access to the ship and reroute it to another planet where the supplies will be looted and the colonists will be made to slave in mines.

All-in-all a fun adventure. The voice cast was excellent and really brought the story to life. ( )

The voices are good, unfortunately the story is not.

The events unfold fairly well until the pirates arrive.
The pirates are such over-the-top, pantomime pirates, that the rest of the tale doesn't work.

The ship and Zero and the creative-problem solving are all good, it just needed different bad guys.

Zero is supposed to be 12 but in behaviour and voice appears a bit younger.

I would say the book audience overall would be ages 8 and younger. ( )

Zero G by Dan Wells and narrated by a whole host of talented players! This is one book kids will truly enjoy! A ship is taking 20,000 people to a new world to settle including Zero. They will be asleep for 105 years but his old messed up and wakes him up after only 28 days. This is what happens during that time and how they ended up with one more person onboard the ship when they got to the new planet! Great action, excitement, humor, and suspense!
The great cast of narrators made it super special! ( )
