The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Murderbot series exploded onto the scene in 2017, and the world has not been the same, since. The series has grown with every release, with book #2 debuting at 95 on the USA Today Bestseller List, #3 at 77, and #4 at 48. A quarter of a million copies later, Murderbot is back in its highly-anticipated, first, full-length standalone novel. Network Effect offers an opportunity like never before for bookstore readers to dive into the series. You know that feeling when you're at work, and you've had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? Come for the pew-pew space battles, stay for the most relatable A.I. you'll read this century.-- I'm usually alone in my head, and that's where 90 plus percent of my problems are. When Murderbot's human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action. Murderbot is still not sure what life holds for it, so until it understands more about what it really wants, it stays with Mensah and her family providing security. When Amena, Mensah's daughter wants to go out on her first mission, Mensah asks Murderbot to go along and provide security. She and the others on the mission from Preservation find more than they bargained for when they are basically kidnapped by ART because it needs Murderbot's help. ART's crew is missing and is desperate to get them back. Murderbot is its only hope.
Network Effect is the first full-length novel in this series and does not disappoint. Murderbot continues on its journey of self-discovery and in doing so, develops deeper relationships; something that it abhors. Amena is especially enjoyable as the only adolescent that has been part of these stories so far. Of all of the humans other than Mensah, she seems to be able to more fully understand Murderbot's relationships because she is unencumbered with the political correctness of adults. My only minor complaint about this novel is that the amount of technical jargon and the lengthy explanations made it difficult to follow at times. Overall, however, this is another very good entry in this series. ( )

Network Effect - Wells
Audio performance by K.Free
4 stars

This novel length book was the best Murderbot adventure so far. Mbot has many opportunities to deny his softer feelings. He isn’t fooling any of the other characters. I enjoyed his verbal altercations with the ART and his protective caring for Amena. I was a bit confused by the flashback segments when they were inserted into the audiobook. It was easier to follow the transitions with the text. In either format, it was a fun adventure. ( )

Murderbot has to deal with people again and this time it's family of people that they want to keep alive that are involved, as well as ART who technically kidnaps them. It also involves privacy and personality and spreading the art of overriding governor modules which sounds like it will have repercussions. It also features alien technology and some people who may or may not be fully in conrtol of themselves.
While it was a good read there were times when it seemed to lag a bit and felt a bit repeditive. Still well worth a read. Murderbot is a lot of fun and one of my favourite series. ( )

Oh Murderbot how I love you!

At long last we have a full length novel in the Murderbot Diaries series by Wells, and while I will be honest and say this was not my favorite installment I did thoroughly enjoy it. Although I have to say, I think Murderbot just works better as a novella. Now that's not me saying this is trash, I mean I gave it 4 stars so clearly It was good, but I wont lie and say it at times felt like it was being heavily stretched to fill the page count.

The first half of the story was exciting and fast paced and captivating, the middle was so slow with so much telling and not enough showing, and then the end was right back to that mind captivating feel, that just urged you to continue going.

My biggest grip with this installment, and is what ultimately brings my rating to a 4, is the fact that it really felt like there was this weird underlying push towards creating a romantic relationship between Murderbot and a particular AI, even though Murderbot has stated since the beginning that it does not like such relationships, which is one of my favorite aspects about Murderbot. Yet it really felt like certain crew members where trying to push this on to it, when they themselves know how Murderbot feels about the topic. There was even a moment when Murderbot specifically asks a certain crew member to stop referring to it as a "relationship" and they completely ignore its request. The "baby" bit was so freaking weird and I hated it. I love the idea of these two bots just having a very strong bond of friendship built on trust, it doesn't need the romantic aspects.

Other than that huge annoyance I loved everything else about this, it has all the snarky Murderbot you could ask for plus more, and there was aliens and new characters and more robots, knowing Murderbot finds certain bot constructs terrifying is hilarious to know.

I am interested to see where the next novella picks up after the end events of this one. So of course I'm going to continue, I love Murderbot way to much not too. ( )

Like the series-to-full-length movie format it follows, everything is a bit wider and a bit heavier, but all the hallmarks of the series are there. We get a return of some beloved characters, more dodgy corporate interlopers, more robots-on A.I.-on-robot (and augmented human) action, and a bigger mystery. But now, with a little more room to breathe, Wells draws out all of those elements in a way that extends the enjoyable experience of the novellas, yet doesn't drag. Network Effect is more than twice the size of All Systems Red, but you'll come to the final pages and hardly notice.
