The new thrilling instalment of John Connolly's popular Charlie Parker series. He is our best hope. He is our last hope. On a lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished church. In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound. To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull. Each is a sacrifice, a summons. And something in the shadows has heard the call. But another is coming: Parker the hunter, the avenger. Parker's mission takes him from Maine to the deserts of the Mexican border; from the canals of Amsterdam to the streets of London - he will track those who would cast this world into darkness. Parker fears no evil. But evil fears him . . .… (mais)

A Book of Bones is a huge story, spanning centuries and continents. A large cast of characters, both living, dead, and somewhere in between populate this very ambitious novel. Charlie Parker and his right and left hand men (I will place Angel on the right and Louis on the side sinister) are present and perform true to form, but share the stage with many others.

I really enjoyed it. Savored it. Took my time with it. It is that type of book---or at least it was for me. It recalled scenes all the way back from the first novel and explained the origin of my personal favorite villain of the whole series. I won't disclose who it is because I HATE spoilers of any type.

As with prior installments, one really needs to read this series in order to get anything close to the full effect. You just can't appreciate the connections between the characters and why certain actions are significant. At least I wouldn't be able to do so.

This series is so solid. Every installment is fantastic. ( )

My Thoughts:
As usual, Jeff Harding's narration is wonderful! The only thing is, he didn't get the Welsh accent right like Kobna Holdbrook-Smith did in Rivers of London.

Another thing I like about this book is that I get my dose of Sam!! My favouritest character in the whole bunch!

I went to St. Mary's Church in Fairford to see if there really are certain coloured glass panes there that the book mentioned... yeah, curiosity killed the cat! And yes, there is that infamous paned glass. And here is the picture I took of it. I didn't feel any vibes, devine good nor evil, though. Maybe I'm just too thick or not sensitive enough... However the St. Mary's church with Odda's chapel close to it is not the same church as the St. Mary's church in Fairford. St. Mary's Church of Deerhurst's roof finialThat church is about an hour away, the St. Mary's Deerhurst church. And yes, Odda's Chapel does exist too. Both churches are steeped in history. That is probably why I find this series so wonderful a read because John Connolly seamlessly weaves fact and fiction into a tapestry so real I could live in it! Kudos to the author!! The actual history is boring, I much prefer John Connolly's version. Both St. Mary's church in Deerhurst and the St. Mary's church in Fairford have roof finials which are distinctly not christian, so the author's musings about what those stone carvings are doing in a christian church is quite valid.

Still on the trail of the super creepy Mors, as well as the seemingly ageless Quayle, Charlie Parker and John Connolly never seem to give us a break!

Quayle is still trying to put together the Fractured Atlas, and Parker is still trying to prevent it. In this volume, Parker, with his pals Angel and Louis, head off to London along with a book expert to try to figure out where Quayle will strike next. We have creepy churches, stained glass windows, (or what appear to be windows), the Green Man, some moors and so much more. We also have appearances from Charlie's daughters, both alive and dead.

This was a long book and it could have been 500 pages longer and it still wouldn't bother me. I never, ever get bored with Connolly's prose or Charlie's thoughts. At this point in the series, I'm expecting things to wrap up, while at the same time, dreading it. I'm hoping that perhaps the series will continue with Charlie's offspring? This is all speculation on my part, but any time now, I'm expecting one or more of these fictional characters I love to die. I'm not sure if my heart can take it, because I've been friends with them for so long.

I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, because I can't imagine my life without looking forward to the next Charlie Parker book!

My highest recommendation!

*I received an e-ARC of this book through Atria/Emily Bestler Books via NetGalley, but I was approved so late, (I didn't think I'd get approved at all at that point), I bought the hardcover!
Either way, this is my honest opinion. READ THE BOOK!* ( )

Have read the series; this is the longest and most complex (to read) of the Parker novels. Told from 3 - maybe 4 different perspectives, which is interesting but sometimes difficult to follow, especially it you do not read the book in a one-reading blitz.
Enjoyed it but not as much as almost all the others in the series.
Would like to see Charlie brought back as the most significant character. ( )
