( ) Zeba Mackenzie is a profiler working for Scotland and previously a member of the special forces. She is mourning the death of her husband, a policeman, when asked to help on a brutal serial psychotic killer case. At the same time she witnesses a train crash and hears a victim's last accusatory words whilst reading of the killer's latest victim and is determined to find out what it means. Oddly the occasional American phrase has crept in, such as calling collect instead of reversing the charges. Quite a dark plot full of psychological analysis. Good characterization, great military references, nice police procedural, good writing. An all-around joy to read. Recommended. I don’t think you will be disappointed. I gave three stars because there is room for improvement in style and substance of the writing, the kind of improvement that rally can’t be put into words but when you read a masterpiece, you know it. The author could very well write a masterpiece some day. Entertaining with some plot flaws. Ziba Mackenzie is a freelance profiler. Her husband, a Scotland Yard detective, died a couple of years ago; she's still struggling with depression and moving on. Then, after she is in a train crash, she is hired by Scotland Yard to profile a serial killer who has started killing after a 20+ year hiatus.
