In a Sweden wracked by war and haunted by folk stories so dark they can only be spoken of in whispers, Helvig has been raised by her brigand father to steal whatever treasure catches her eye. When her men ambush a strange girl on the road with hair pale as death and a crow perched on her shoulder, Helvig cannot resist bringing home a truly unique prize: a genuine witch. Drawn irresistibly into the other woman's web, Helvig soon learns of Gerda's reason for walking the icy border roads alone: to find the Queen who lives at the top of the world and kill her. Anyone else would be smart enough not to believe a children's story, but Helvig is plagued by enchantments of her own, and struggles to guard the sins of her past while growing closer to the other woman. As Christmastide gives way to the thin-veiled days when ghosts are at their most vengeful, the two women will find themselves on a journey to a final confrontation that will either redeem them or destroy them entirely. I really wanted to like this, but there were a lot of copyediting issues that made it difficult to really lose myself in the story. I loved the detail of the nomadic "robber" tribe in the north of Sweden, and the way that magic was incorporated into the story, as something that sort of sneaks up. But odd word choices or spelling/grammar errors kept reminding me that I was reading text, and I became hyper critical of that text. For example, one of the main characters has been searching for her little brother for quite some time - it seemed to me that it had been for several years, as she had become well versed in many skills and trades thanks to staying with different families as she traveled. However, it turns out that her little brother has only been missing for a year or two at most. I stopped reading at this point to calculate the timeline, because it seemed so strange!

Otherwise, it's The Snow Queen with teenage girls as the protagonists, and they fall in love along the way. I don't remember a lot of details beyond those listed above and some of the more memorable scenes (such as in a haunted church, or finding the little brother). It's not awful, but it could be so much better with just a little more polish and attention. ( )
